Music Review: Flawed But Not Bad

I'd never heard of this band until I kept hearing a song on KOMP 92.3 in Las Vegas. It had a female singer and when the song hit the chorus, it sounded like she was singing "messa potato." When they added a song clip of the chorus to one of their commercials, it drove me nuts enough to call in. The jocks went through almost every song they played that had a female singer until they came across "Breathe Again." A little investigating revealed this to be an overt Christian band and those mysterious words were actually "I'm suffocating." Once I heard it clear on the CD, I was able to sort of follow that. However, when I heard it again on the radio, it still sounded like "messa potato." So, to me, "Breathe Again" is still the "Messa Potato Song."
Now that I got that out of the way, knowing they were overtly Christian, but also knowing I don't really listen to the words anyway, I liked the singer's voice enough to buy the CD. I got the special edition with the extra acoustic tracks at the end, plus the DVD.
As for the music. Even when I try, I can't understand a lot of the words, except the occasionally "God," "Jesus" and "Pray", so if I can ignore that, the overt Christianity doesn't turn me off that bad.
However, what I noticed right off the bat was that this was more of a solo album for Lacey Mosley. The vocals almost totally dominate the music and Lacey's voice is to die for (the real reason I picked this up in the first place). Because the musicianship, though highly competent, is so bland, she could have anyone on an acoustic guitar in the background playing chords, as is proven on the last acoustic tracks. The only spark of personality or anything out of the ordinary was track 11, that God song that ends with a string of feedback, reminding me of the 60's.
Flyleaf have been classified as an alternative rock band, and if that means anti-solo guitar playing (in other words, all rhythm guitar) then this fits. At least when I saw the list of band members, the two guitar players were just listed as "guitars." I don't think if one of them was listed as "lead guitar" that it would be an accurate description. Sure, being a musician, I'm biased toward more complicated guitar playing, but I'll admit the two guitarists are competent with chords.
Overall, I'm not sorry I bought this CD. It's not really my thing, but it adds another facet to the musical landscape. Only recommended if you are a Jesus freak or like hardcore alternative with no "noodling."
