Music Review: If you like alternative

Often times one can be pegged as an "indy-brat," or something of the like when he or she starts yapping about how a band's older stuff was better before production stepped in. Peg me as you wish, but this band simply is more dynamic when they are given artistic freedom.
At a first listen it has a rougher taste across the tongue. It's not metal by any means (as some have erroneously labeled the band), but it definitely has an edge that is missing on the LP. The opener "I'm so sick" has a more experimental quality than on the album. Different effects used on the guitars and a more prominent bass-line throughout.
The next track "Fully Alive" opens up with a sound that I can only call "refreshing." The bass is heavier, the drums are crisp and fresh. To me, it makes the album version seem almost watered down. The addition of a bridge improves the song both lyrically and musically. The only gripe I have about this song, is the vocals seem like someone was playing around in the production boot too much. It's too saccharine. The chorus also lacks the last two lines that are found on the album version.
"Breathe Today," the band's first single opens with a verse which is completely ommitted on the LP. Why? Stupidity I guess. The vocals are smooth and the soft airy intro provides a great constrast for the more static, abrasive sound that follows. Other than that the song is not much different.
The following track "I'm Sorry" does not drastically differ from the album version, other than it sounds a bit less polished. And the final verse is accompanied by heavy, somniferous instrumentals.
As the CD skips to the next track, it feels like a punch in the face. The fan-favorite, "Cassie" has what I like to call "less talking, more rocking." Not only does the band pay tribute to Rachel Scott (who's story is more valid than that of Cassie Bernell) the instrumentals are crunchier, ther guitar work is more diverse. If the howling opening line doesn't have you, the overall sound should have you nodding your head by the end.
The final song on this album is my favorite. I loved the LP version, but I thought that the sound was slightly grating. When the EP version opens however, it still has that dynamic intro, but it's a bit smoother like a wave hitting your face and pulling you under the tide. Too specific? ;) Give it a listen then. I doubt you will be disappointed. Although White's back-up vocals are sadly missing from this version, the EP still trumps the LP in this arena.
If you've heard the band live and prefer that gritty sound to the more polished studio sound, this EP is a definite must-have.
