Vertigo records was a progressive and jazz label, but they also had their fair share of 1970s shlock rock, most notably, Black Sabbath, and Ronno, Mick Ronson's band.
Flied Egg was a heavy Japanese band who made some fantastic, layered heavy rock. I have been thinking about contemporaries I could compare their sound too, but I realized, these guys were just a little ahead of their time.
The thick textures, keyboards, and attention to detail make Flied Egg a product of the 1970s--this is way too substantial to ever be mistaken for a hair band. But some of the guitar heroics have amazing flash, approaching almost 1980s fair, but here again, with a lot more substance.
The Japanese vocals add a really interesting flavor--does anyone know, did these guys speak English, or were they singing phonetically--but when they kick it, man, is there some attitude.
