Music Reviews of Fleet Foxes

Music Review: Sun Giant EP & Fleet Foxes intro LP Reviewed
Rating: 5 Stars

My life was never the same after hearing the song Mykonos, from the Sun Giant EP, on KUSF student radio (San Francisco). I immediately purchased the EP, and it was stellar. I couldn't wait for the full length LP, which I purchased as soon as it was released. All the positive reviews and hype are spot on. This band is like nothing I have ever heard before. Their orchestral, spiritual folk rock sound rivals the best recordings of Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby Stills & Nash, and even the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson is apparently a strong influence, whose dreamy style of harmony is heard on some tracks. I will be shocked if this band does not become famous, but its history of personnel changes and apparent organic philosophy for modesty may cause them to run away from fame and commercialism, which could also cause them to break up or transform prematurely under all the pressure! I sure hope they are prepared to receive and promote all the love they will receive from music fans. They sure deserve it. When the hell is the next album, and when are they coming to my town?

Music Review: Excellent, but so many reviews...
Rating: 4 Stars

...seem to be given in the heat of the early moments--in that time when you first hear a new band you like and listen to them too much for your own good. There is certainly something to be said of a band that can induce such a... heated state. However, while this album is wonderful, it is not the best you've ever heard.

Do you like contemporary, indie incarnations of 'folk music'/'folk rock' (do you like Vetiver, Kings of Convenience, The Shins, Bon Iver, Papercuts, The Avett Brothers...and I'm sure many other [those are just some of mine, I'm sure many have there own favorites])? When a band is compared to Simon & Garfunkel and the Beach Boys, is that a positive thing to you? Do you like gospel and Allison Krauss?

Or maybe you just liked the soundtrack to "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" and haven't searched much beyond that ('til now).

Well, you will like this album (and the band's EP, Sun Giant). You will like this album, and you will hope for many more from this band. So now, buy it and support 'em.

Music Review: Recommended for all lo-fi lovers
Rating: 5 Stars

Anyone who loves lo-fi - The Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Death Cab for Cutie, etc. - should get this album. I would say Fleet Foxes are closest to Iron & Wine (or Carissa's Wierd for those who've heard them) because while there are moments where the beat speeds up, it's never loud or "rock". It's more like baroque pop with the vocal harmonies combining with gentle string arrangements and flutes for a sound which is soothing and beautiful.

Fleet Foxes produces some great harmonies throughout this album, especially on "White Winter Hymnal", my favorite track. There are no tracks on here I ever skip over, they're all good. Songs such as "Ragged Wood" and "Quiet Houses" have faster paced sections which are uplifting. "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" and "Meadowlarks" have a wonderful sparseness to them.

For the longest time Amazon had this CD in my "recommendations" but I neglected it. I don't recall why I ended up giving it a chance, but I'm very glad I did. Now I can't wait for Fleet Foxes to record more music.

Music Review: Transcending Music
Rating: 5 Stars

I listen to Fleet Foxes new cd as I type this. I recently happen to be flipping through the TV channels and heard them on the David Letterman Show - AMAZING! The song was "Blue Ridge Mountains" my favorite song as soon as I heard it! I knew I had to buy this CD because it was GOING TO BE GOOD. Yep, it sure is. The folk music will enchant you. It seems you can do almost anything while listening to this CD. I could study or be painting while listening to Fleet Foxes. It somehow takes you back in time to a place when music had meaning. The last song "Oliver James" will get your attention a bit more. Make sure to read the insert slip provided which holds the CD. In listening to the CD you can tell the band is very in tune and passionate about their music. This CD wasn't slapped together carelessly like most music is today. Make sure to ADD FLEET FOXES to your collection! I hope they tour and I can't wait for another cd in the future!
Thanks go out to FLEET FOXES for a "enchanting" CD!

Music Review: Bait-and-switch
Rating: 2 Stars

VERY disappointed in this one. After I saw the band perform on SNL, I was intrigued and thought this was the breath of fresh air I was looking for - not true. This album is HIGHLY derivative of any folk-rock band from the late 60s/70s; Crosby, Stills & Nash, Cat Stevens, America - take your pick. The first few minutes of the album were gripping, until I realized that every song sounded exactly alike: canned vocals, overblown harmonies, drippy lyrics and half-baked melodies. Even the cover is trying too hard to look retro-folksy; you can't push all these throwbacks too much or you just become a gimmick, and that's exactly what they've done here.

I have to admit that I haven't completely written off the band as of yet. They're working on a new album that should be released later this year and it supposedly is less poppy and more jam-like. This might better suit the band and could yield a good album, but there certainly isn't one to be found here.
