Music Review: NOT TO FLAME'S STANDARD

I purchased this CD for my 7 year old son for several reasons:
a) I loved "Our World Redeemed."
b) I really liked "Surrender" and "Move." Thought the whole album would be just as hype.
c) I had read the rave reviews on Amazon.
d) Given a choice between Lecrae and Flame, my son picked Flame.
I've listened to FLAME on many other songs ("Make War" by Tedashii, tracks from "Our World Fallen" and "Our World Redeemed"). I've also heard him speak about the Bible and Holy Hip Hop. I have come to respect his Bible knowledge and lyrical skill.
The best track is "Move." Not only does it make you want to dance, he skillfully covers everything from the need to witness and admonishing people not to "shack up" to being careful about what we watch on television and obeying God in everyday life. He does all this without sounding condescending or self-righteous. It is a masterpiece.
I also like "Surrender" quite a bit. The verses are enjoyable and the hook is catchy. Those two tracks are the first I heard all the way through before buying the album, and they got me excited about getting it.
Once I bought "Captured," I listened to it all the way through and was dissapointed. Most of the lyrics don't challenge me to think or examine myself, which was surprising to me. One thing that always endeared FLAME to me was his ability to state things skillfully and simply enough for an unchurched person to understand while giving even a seasoned saint something to think about. Perhaps "Captured" is intented to appeal to a broader range of people and ease them into Christian rap. Even so, I don't think he needed to hold back in order to accomplish that goal.
Whereas "Our World Redeemed" had track after track with musical variety and lyrics that reinforced or enhanced my understanding of some meaty and basic biblical concepts, "Captured" seems to have a lot of songs that sound similar to one another. The delivery is pretty much the same on each song. "Put On" and "Double Back" are noteworthy, however, and the sermon clip about fasting is a much needed reality check for American Christians who are so used to pleasure and fun instead of pain and sacrifice.("Daniel 10")
FLAME is still my favorite Christian rapper, and I wish him all the best. I'm sure there are songs on the album that will grow on me over time. I do look forward to the next album in hopes he will again raise the bar, though.
P.S. My 7 year old is not as demanding, so he's happy with all of the fast songs. :-)
