Music reviews of The Way of the Fist

Music Review: An Almost Flawless Metal Debut!
Rating: 5 Stars

The music of Five Finger Death Punch is exactly that, like a hard punch to the face, it is brutal and honest, but also they have a great feel for melody as well. This is truly one of the best metal debuts that I have heard in a long time. Singer Ivan Moody, as others have stated, truly has limitless range, he growls and screams as good as anybody, but he also has a great singing voice with a flair for melody! The lyrics are straightforward and easily decipherable, but the strong point of the lyrics is the honesty and the way they are universally relatable in most of the songs!

The album starts off with Ashes, in which the intro to the song is Ivan screaming like a madman, you know you are in for a brutal album right away. Ashes is a very heavy song with autobiographical lyrics by Moody and is about people accepting him as he is or they can fu** off, and the song has very melodic chorus with great vocals! The Way of the Fist is a brutally heavy song with really great drumming and awesome heavy riffing throughout, the pre-choruses are probably the best part to the song because the beat is just cool as hell. The Way of the Fist track sounds something similar to Slipknot around the Iowa era. Salvation is one of the more powerful tracks on the album and is a song about finding personal salvation without having faith in god, basically athiest's peace, and is a really great song, definitely one of the best on the album! Ivan is basically sticking a middle finger out at people who would look down on him because he doesn't believe in religion, he doesn't need them. The song is also a perfect combination of very brutal verses and a really great hook, and again a very melodic chorus. The Bleeding is the big single off of the album, and is the most diverse song on the album. It is still heavy, but is also easily the most melodic song on the album, and is about a meaningful romantic relationship gone bad, and trying to deal with it. It is clearly a song that anybody who is been through a horrible break-up will relate to, and it has the most melodic verses on the album by far. A Place to Die simply has just amazing guitar work by lead guitarist Zoltan Bathory, he plays some amazing solo's on this track, as well as throughout the whole album. The song is again easily decipherable and is about searching for your place in the world and it being a very difficult adventure. The Devil's Own is an intensely personal song by Moody about his relationship with his father, it takes on a similar format to the song as many of the songs with very heavy verses and again a very beautifully sung chorus by Moody, and this is definitely one of the most powerful songs on here. Lyrics like "It's because of you I'm broken, it's because of you I'm dead inside, it's because of you I'm godforsaken" paint a strong and sincere picture! This is easily one of the best tracks on the album.

White Knuckles is just a bada$$ track, which starts off with Moody simply saying, "Fu** it all!!!" The song seems to be about basically being discontent with the world and how people are. It probably features one of the best and most hardcore breakdowns with Moody screaming, "I'm taking back control.....WITH MY KNUCKLES! Another great song. Can't Heal You is the heaviest song on the album along with Meet the Monster and is about not being able to help a person dealing with an addiction because they do not want help basically! Death Before Dishonor is another song that is somewhat similar to something that Slipknot may have done in the Iowa era, and is a great song about trying to live life to the fullest and ignoring people that get in your way, has a great solo to begin the album and that explodes into a full throttle assault by the whole band, has an incredible heavy main riff and then again a great chorus. Meet the Monster is one of the two heaviest songs on the album, it simply owns. The intro to the song is one of the heaviest I have ever heard! This song is just brutal and heavy from start to finish, it is one of the less melodic songs on the album, but is all the better for it! A perfect album closer, in my opinion. The Bonus songs that you get if you by the special version are actually a lot different that the original 10 tracks, they are not as heavy and are more radio friendly. Never Enough is a very radio friendly song with mostly sung vocals and a pretty generic chorus, good for people who like more mainstream stuff, but fans of the heavier stuff may not like this one. The song does get a lot better towards the end. Stranger Than Fiction is along the lines of Never Enough, in that it is not as heavy as the first 10 tracks, and features a great vocal intro by Moody followed by a very cool breakdown. It is a good song, but more radio friendly like Never Enough. The Bleeding (Acoustic) if you like acoustic stuff is very good and I really think it was a nice addition, you get to really see Moody's vocal chops again.

Overall, this is a first-class debut by these guys and I would recommend this to anybody who loves heavy music, metal, thrash, and also to fans of Slipknot as they and FFDP have a somewhat similar style! Pick this up, you won't be disappointed!
