Music Review: Sheer Brilliance

The collection is a breathtaking historical exploration into the life and times of John Work II, the importance he placed on the revival of spirituals and the triumphant recording of the Fisk (University) Jubilee Quartet.
Spirituals, secular and sacred pieces are captured on the nearly 50 tracks. In another time period, it would have been the Fisk Jubilee Singers being recorded, but they were too large an ensemble to capture through acoustic recording horns, so four members were chosen for the various studio sessions.
Archeophone Records stays true to the yearly chronology in its presentation on the two discs: opening with the quartet's initial sessions for the Victor Record Company in 1909 and 1911, while concluding with the 1915-16 Columbia recordings and one of two known discs produced for the Starr label - of Richmond, Indiana - in 1916. The mastering of the fragile recordings is incredible, with the back story surrounding seven of the nine cylinders from the quartet's December 1911 session for the Edison Phonograph Company absolutely fascinating; they were discovered about a decade ago in a flea market by collector Ken Flaherty, Jr., who is the album's co-producer.
There are also parts of a 1983 interview historian/author Doug Seroff conducted with Jerome I. Wright, who was then one of the last surviving members of the Fisk group to perform under John Work II. The album also contains a wealth of essays and photographs that span 100 pages.
This is a piece of American history that is brilliantly packaged....and breathes renewed life into a period when one man understood that the path to the future must be paved with an understanding and appreciation of the past.
