Music Review: "Awesome! Cool!" and Suprisingly delightful!

I admit that I have been a big fan of Fisk since their 2003 album "In Bright Mansions" helped me introduce Negro spirituals to my children as a serious musical genre, as opposed to the simple, nonsensical versions on the kiddie Bible tapes to which they were accustomed. After we stumbled upon this group's enjoyable performance of Mr. Banjo on You Tube, I listened to online clips of the other songs to get a feel for the rest of the album, but was unimpressed. Nevertheless, my 9-year old wanted it so I acquiesced. I'm glad that I did. It truly is a work of musical and visual art. The concert on the DVD reveals the passion and intensity with which the group sings and feels each song, often to the point of tears on their part. For example, the opening number "I thank you Jesus" is just a song on the CD. But when I watched the DVD and realized that they were singing, "for you brought me a mighty long way," on the steps of the old slave castle and probable last view of their African ancestor, the emotional impact and truth of this spiritual hit home. My 11-year old rated the album as "cool!" and the 9-year old said it was "awesome!". Both are making room on their mp3's for Sacred Journey, right next to Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and the Jonas Brothers. Now that's what I call "Awesome and Cool!"
