Music Review: Fireflight- For Those Who Wait [crobsession.tumblr.com]

Fireflight is a band all about the message. For them, songwriting is standing back and letting God speak. That's what makes their music so powerful--their last album, Unbreakable, was definitive evidence of that. We all know that a new album brings a new message, but there is no need to fear. For Those Who Wait has a strong them that's sure to speak to the hearts of everyone that hears it.
The theme of the album is--simply put--waiting. So many times we're so focused on something we hope to have in the future that we fail to see what God is trying to teach us right now, in the present. And sometimes we're in a tough spot that appears permanent. We're constantly waiting for God to come along and fix it, but we don't realize that He's breaking us down so that He can mold us into something greater. As sung in the album's title track, "The pressure makes us stronger/ The struggle makes us hunger/ The hard lessons make the difference/ And the difference makes it worth it." This is a message that we all need to hear from time to time, and I'm grateful to Fireflight for giving us a teaching and good music with their releases.
The band's goal with this album was to have a bigger sound than Unbreakable. While I think that would be hard to do, they accomplished their goal in different ways throughout the album. Some pieces fall short, but others have a quality that we didn't find even on Unbreakable. From the start, we get a string section that leads into Dawn Michele's soaring vocals. Her talent is consistent throughout the album, and it blends well with the band's style of rock. Songs like "Desperate," "Fire In My Eyes," and "New Perspective" show the heavier side of Fireflight. Yet to contrast Unbreakable here for a second, For Those Who Wait seems to have a little more of the slow tracks that Fireflight does with a fantastic job than their last album did. While this album has one more of the "ballad" type songs than their last one did, some of the songs take a little longer to get off the ground. It's for this reason that I think Unbreakable had more of the heavier edge that the band seemed to want to improve on.
The lyrical content is as expected. It's 100% solid teaching. It would be hard to highlight songs on this album, but the song "Name" jumps out as one to examine. The chorus says, "He sees you/ He's near you/ He knows your face/ He knows your pain/ He sees you/ He loves you/ He knows your name." It's a very emotional song that I think will catch a lot of peoples' attention.
So although Unbreakable seems to beat For Those Who Wait in terms of heaviness, the lyrical content remains the same. The message is fantastic--one that everyone needs to hear. I have a lot of respect for Fireflight for the work that they put into each of their projects, and I can hardly wait for their next record.
