Music reviews of Left Side of the Brain

Music Review: A Modern Classic...A 5 Star Album -- I HAVE OFFICIALLY BECOME A "FICTION PLANE" FAN!
Rating: 5 Stars

If you are a fan of Punk Rock/New Wave, Classic Rock, Alternative Music; a band that has mastery over their image and sound; intelligent, powerful poetry and lyrics, buy this album. If you're a fan of The Police and/or U2, buy this album. If you're Generation X, and you like the music from the 1970s-1990s, buy this album. This album is raw, angry, ironic, and visceral. The production, though seemingly raw, is expansive and orchestral. Especially when you consider that this band is a three-piece. The producer, Paul Corkett, should probably be the official producer for them, the way that Steve Lillywhite has become for U2.

Now, let's get some things straight here: The fact that Joe Sumner has inherited an excellent voice from his Dad (I think we all know who that is), and was exposed to that era of music and musicianship (just as many of us were), cannot be denied. If you're a Sting fan, you'll love this music. If you're a Police fan, you'll love this music. If you love the emotive vocal abilities of Bono and Sting, you will love all of this. Why run from it? Most people got to know Fiction Plane through The Police tour of 2007 (but they remain interested because of this great group's OWN qualities and abilities), and, in this case, it's not a crime to have two groups (The Police, U2) speak highly of a burgeoning group that recalls and contemporizes the best strengths of the Rock ethos from the 1970s-1990s, and breaks some new ground in the process for a very promising future...how many groups out there right now are doing that? Not many. To be honest, there are times on this album when you will swear that Sting or Bono is singing these songs, but it's a good kind of eerie familiarity...and make no mistake, Joe does have his own individuality, and it does make its presence known. Either way, this music is all good.

"It's A Lie" is a Modern Punk Rock Classic (Play The Police's "Roxanne", then play this song...oh, the similarity...yet, oh, the irony)that should win a Grammy if there's any hope for music in the future. "Anyone" is the best song to hear if you're being introduced to this group for the first time (positive echoes of u2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday"). "Death Machine" is bitingly contemporary (especially considering that we're at war right now). "Two Sisters" is a reggae/rock classic filled w/ irony. I dare a Police fan to listen to "Running the Country" and not make plot parallels to Stewart Copeland's "Bombs Away" from 1980. "Fake Light From the Sun" is the perfect, nihilistic coda to this present and future Rock classic.

This album has such a great UNITY to it. Every song filters so well into the next. This LP hit me the same way that The Pretenders 1979 debut did. When I was finished, I was like, "WOW!"

Note: the artwork for this album is very striking and Lovecraftian, if you know what that means. Mr. Lake's depictions are a kind of mass of the themes of the album. He should probably be the principle artist for all future Fiction Plane LPs.

Joe, I now have a new bass player/lead singer to love...
Seton, you're a guitar God who has now been added to a growing list of greats...
Pete, ah, my boy, Pete...you're the American of the group, so my patriotic heart swells everytime I hear you at the toms. You are the newest edition to a list of drummers that make Rock N Roll what it so greatly and powerfully is...

Guys, you've destroyed and rebuilt me. Please, do it again.
