Music Review: Busoni can be dangerous interpretivly

Ferruccio Busoni can be quite difficult to interpret,mostly his piano music.His orchestrations come from a firmer tradition of Brahms and Mahler.But for the piano solo genre and I am not speaking of the incredible technique one needs ,but a sense of maturity and vision is necessary. Busoni's music is dangerously simple at times, coming from late Listz, and the transitional set of problematics of writing music after the orgy of Romanticism. For Busoni you always need to keep a reserve of emotion knowing when to give an obvious foreground its due, as when Busoni frequently taps into his Italianate demeanor with a singable and knowable street tune, as he does in these Elegies. You need incredible discipline as well,for Busoni's sonic constructions are all very predictably shaped. Claudio Arrau once said when you play a tremolo, it cannot sound like a telephone ringing, and in Busoni as well his piano has sonic elements that can self-defeat the musical argument if not thought about and Grasso has that performative element at work. I found this especially in the Elegies,where an archetectural vision is also required.And also the seductivily simple yet complex Berceuse,where the pure piano sonority is the focus,the broken octaves B-naturals, and the tremoli,like late Listz,or early Satie for that matter, where not much happens on the musical surface, but much needs to happen inside the pianist's constitution. In the Toccata, and the Albumblatt, where the musical discourse is obvious, the argument gets by. But again the Elegies are like miniature orchestral tone-poems and dangerous in that aspect.
