Music Review: One of the best punk albums ever

I can`t describe the feeling when I finally got to buy this album. After searching from every damn place in Finland, I finally found this and knew it was worth it. I had heard almost every song from this album, and it doesn`t fail.
First off, let me say that FEAR is one of the most underrated, legendary punk bands ever. In the first wave of punk back in the 1977, FEAR formed in Bay Area, and started stirring things up in the L.A- scene. Along with Black Flag and Dead Kennedys, Fear helped to create the hardcore scene. But FEAR wasn`t anything like the other bands back then. While Black Flag were angry, revolutionary and serious, and while many of the bands couldn`t play, FEAR was offensive, against anything and funny. And they could play. FEAR`s sound wasn`t like anything back then, with Philo Cramers w-e-i-r-d guitar playing (I still consider him one of the best guitarists ever), Spit Stix`s spitfire drumming, Derf Scratch completing the rad rhythm section and then, there was Lee Ving. Along with Darby Crash, he was the most notorious singers in the scene then. A total prick to everyone, pissing on everything from women, gays to other punks. His skills of crowd- taunting and abusing were immortalized in the great punk rockumentary "The Decline Of Western Civilization". Ving has an very unique delivery, a mix of redneck-ranting and yes, good singing.
Now, to the cd. It`s a shame that FEAR isn`t remembered as much as bands like Black Flag and X, because although they went downhill after this and never made another classic like this, The Record is one of the best punk albums ever to come from the L.A -scene (along with Damaged, Group Sex and Los Angeles). The production`s pretty crispy and clear despite the fact that this was underground punk. About a 1/2 of this album is pure gold. Songs like "Let`s Have A War" (a not too subtle commentary about, you guessed it, war), "Beef Bologna" (starting off as a hilarious blues parody and then exploding into a fast, catchy and stupid punk classic), "I Don`t Care About You" (a nihilistic hate anthem that doesn`t even try to be funny, just plain nasty... and helluva catchy song), "New Yorks Alright If You Like Saxophones" (a hilarious song, where Ving potraits what`s wrong with New York with Derf playing saxophone on the back. Great song) and "I Love Livin` In The City", which is nothing more nothing less than the best punk song ever in my humble opinion. Catchy, funny, nasty, offensive, but yet so true about the city life.
There are a couple of other good songs like "Camarillo", "Gimme Some Action" and "Foreign Policy" in the cd. They`re not classics like the songs I mentioned above, but good nonetheless. The rest is pretty blah. Overall "The Record" is reckless punk rock greatness. Highly recommended.
