Music reviews of Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder

Music Review: Highly recommended for all electronic music fans
Rating: 4 Stars

While growing up listening to the distinct sound of Fatboy Slim, I could tell at just that young age that his music was completely different than most other music I would hear on the radio. Thus since my childhood, I have always had a bias in support of his music because it succeeded at being unique. With this said, I will try to review this album with as little favoritism as possible.
Why Try Harder was released on June 19, 2006 and is a compilation of Fatboy Slim's most popular songs, except for "Champion Sound" and "That Old Pair of Jeans, which are two new tracks that are also included on the album. In each track, Slim blends different beats together from different sources, including vocal recordings, piano, guitar samples, synthetically made noises and many other sources. The way that he blends these sources together is what makes the tracks so great. For example in "Going Out of My Head", the background electronic ambiance is vital to the sound of the track and compliments the guitar perfectly. The same can be said about the effect of the electronic ambient sound applied to one of the most popular tracks on the album "Right Here, Right Now". The ambience is more noticeable in this track, as it gives the track its distinct eerie sound. Another track that stuck out for me on the album was "Sunset (Bird of Prey)". Despite being a fan of Fatboy Slim's work, I had never listened to this track before hearing it on this album. However, I think with my recent electronic music education, the track was more distinct to me than it would have been previously because it is one of the more noticeably electronic sounding tracks on the album. Personally, up to track 10 I think that the album is outstanding, however after that it starts to drop off. I'm not saying that the rest of the album isn't worth listening to, but it just doesn't pack the same punch that the first half does. The final track on the album, "That Old Pair of Jeans", is my personal favorite. Although it lacks the electronic feel that many of the other tracks have, the background chorus blends perfectly with the vocals, to give a simply great mix.
The only thing really disappointing about the album is that the tracks are shorter radio edit versions. This means that they were cut up or modified in some way from their original form to make a smoother sounding piece to play on the radio, however by doing this, some of the unique intro, and intermittent sounds were cut out. These versions were used to save space on the disk; however I would have paid an extra couple of dollars for a two disk album in order to have the full versions of each track. Personally I feel that if he were going to release a greatest hits album, the tracks should not be modified versions of their true form.
None of these songs, however, would have been possible without the development of early electronic instruments, like the Hammond Organ, which set the stage for the electronic genre that would fully develop in the mid-20th century. Throughout all of the advancements in electronic music, the Hammond Organ can still be heard in music today, as Slim even uses it in "That Old Pair of Jeans". Slim is also directly connected to one of the founders of the musique concrete genre of electronic music, Pierre Henry. Slim put his own spin on Henry's classic "Psyche Rock" in 2000, and I was very disappointed when I didn't see the remix on this album, as it is one of my personal Fatboy Slim favorites.
All in all Why Try Harder is a great compilation of some of Slim's best work. I highly recommend not only to every Slim fan, but also to anyone who is a fan of electronic music in general, as it is truly an awesome album.
