Music Review: The Princess of Soul is Back!

Fantasia! Fantasia! Fantasia! What else can you say after listening to one of the best albums of the year? Her 2010 release, "Back To Me", is certainly a reintroduction to the amazingly talented, southern girl who received millions of votes on a little show called American Idol. The growth in her voice and song selections is evident, and even though she has had some troubles in her life, it does not show on this fantastic album. With emotions, vocal talent, and catchy songs, what more could you ask for?
The album begins with the song entitled, "I'm Doin' Me". It is a very straight forward and upbeat song about Fantasia coming to the realization that she is her own main priority. The song mixes urban beats with attention grabbing piano chords, and a catchy chorus. "I'm Doin' Me" is something that everyone can relate to. Being that Fantasia has had issues in her personal life where she took care of everyone except herself, this is the perfect song to start off the album.
The second song is Fantasia's first single, "Bittersweet". "Bittersweet" is a mid-tempo song that has a very oldies-R&B sound, and it reminds us why we have come to love Fantasia so much: She's a young girl who has the soul and voice of the past. The lyrics explain how Fantasia still thinks about the real, but hurtful love of her past relationship. This song, like most of Fantasia's songs, is something that everyone can relate to. Considering this song reached #1 on the Urban AC chart, while being in the top 10 of the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, it's quite evident that people love and relate to this song.
Fantasia's third cut on her album is called "Man of the House". The very successful and talented singer/songwriter Ne-Yo provided Fantasia with a lyrically strong piece of work. Fantasia sings about being the person who wears the pants in the relationship, when her man should be. She sings with conviction, and vocal runs that makes you want jump with excitement. This song could very well be the 2010 National Women's Anthem, but we'll see as soon as I get the petition started...
Once Fantasia gets a little frustration off her chest, she starts to get a little more sensual. The fourth track, entitled "Who's Been Loving You", is about wondering if the person you left is still being loved. The song begins with a very light piano accompaniment, and urban beats start to weave into the music. This song can very well get stuck in your head, but nothing is wrong with you if it does! Some people feel as though this song is missing "something", and it could very well be a stronger bridge and some vocal buildup towards the end. Still, this does not hurt the song in it's entirety, and it's definitely worth a listen.
Fantasia's fifth cut on the album is "Collard Greens & Cornbread", and this song could very well be the best track on the album. With musical pieces of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's Motown-drenched "Your Precious Love", Fantasia takes over this song and makes it sound like a totally different piece. Right when the music begins, you know this is a song that you could clean the house to on Saturday mornings and cook to on Sunday afternoons. "Collard Greens & Cornbread" is about Fantasia's love being better than the soul food of her lover's mother. As the music progresses, Fantasia's voice begins to grow and she gives a fantastic vocal performance that will keep you coming back for seconds, thirds, and fourths!
In the next song, Fantasia is ready to be taught about love in her soulful, guitar accompanying piece, "Teach Me". This song is a little more reserved compared to her other songs, which makes it something that stands out. She sings through this song so effortlessly, and you can simply relax to it. Also, Fantasia has writing credits on this song, and it's nice to see her grow as an artist.
Even though the last song was reserved, "Move On Me" is definitely not like that, for the most part. As the song begins with crescendoing strings, you ask yourself, "What is about to...?" But, before you can finish that question, the song blasts you with horns and drums. This is a standout, because this song gives us the upbeat Fantasia we all have come to love, not to mention, she also has writing credits for this song. The chorus is very in your face, and then the verses turn into something that you can cruise to. In this song Fantasia expresses how she wants a guy to be aggressive and come after her. I mean, who doesn't want to be moved on?
The eighth track, "Trust Him", sounds very reminiscent of Lauryn Hill's "Miseducation", which makes this refreshing in today's music world. Fantasia sings about the feeling of trust she gets from being around her lover. The music is very fun, and that describes the song as a whole. Fantasia sings flawlessly, and gives us a little more power towards the end.
The ninth track is "The Thrill Is Gone". This serious song begins with an attention grabbing instrumentation. In this piece, Fantasia sings about how the excitement of her relationship is no longer existent. This is another song where Fantasia can let the soul go. Considering "The Thrill Is Gone" was sampled by the Isaac Hayes cover "Walk On By", the grit in Fantasia's voice is definitely necessary. Also, Cee-Lo Green, of Gnarls Barkley, is featured on this song. Towards the end, he provides a smooth and sensual rap that will have you hypnotized throughout his verses. Then, without hesitation, Fantasia brings the song home.
Fantasia's tenth track on the album is entitled, "Falling In Love Tonight". This song is moreso in the R&B-Pop realm, but that doesn't hinder Fantasia at all. The song expresses how Fantasia is ready to fall in love, even if it means finding love in a club. What sounds like a xylophone, gives the song a sweet and lighthearted sound, compared to her last track. If she considers this as a single, this could very well be the "When I See U" of "Back To Me".
Fantasia stays in the R&B-Pop realm with her promotional single, "Even Angels". This song begins with a very angelic piano accompaniment, that is mixed with suttle urban beats. In this song, Fantasia sings about how she has become stronger since the conclusion of her last relationship. It is a very inspirational song that many people will relate to. Her vocals are simple, but it just shows the beauty and uniqueness of her vocal tone.
Lastly, is the awe-inspiring "I'm Here". Even though she has performed this many times in "The Color Puple Musical", it is not to be skipped if you need some encouragement, and we all do!. The song might run a little slow for some in the beginning, but it picks up as the song progresses. With a 44-piece orchestra backing her up, Fantasia lets her emotions flow and puts it out there for the world to hear! This song is a great conclusion to an album about self-worth, and it definitely makes Fantasia's point.
This album is what R&B is about: Emotion and flat-footed SANGIN'! Even though Fantasia didn't produce any music for three years, she shows that she hasn't lost her touch, and if anything, she has gained so much musically. This album is not like most R&B albums. Fantasia gives us all of the different sides to R&B. She goes from 60s R&B to 21st Century R&B, and it's great to hear a variation. Fantasia was set on creating a classic album that has something for everyone, and it certainly does. Considering her personal life and song selections, it makes sense that Fantasia agreed with Steve Harvey when he suggested the album be named "Back To Me". This album brings us back to the first time we heard that soulful voice on television, and to know that she has grown as a person without losing her musical roots will make many fans very happy. Congratulations Fantasia. It is certainly back to you.
