I used to watch Faith Prince performing and think, "How does she DO that?" With this album it dawned on me...who cares how she does it? It's enough that she DOES. Faith was awarded BackStage's Bistro award for Outstanding Major Cabaret Engagement of the year for this act at Joe's Pub. It's almost as good on disc. Her stories are great, but the way she tells them, each word twisted to perfection in that indescribable voice, make them jewels that can be listened to over and again without losing their punch. The voice is truly one of the great voices, warm and rich and funny, sliding from screwy dame to low and easy, sometimes within the same song. Spiky and hilarous in "The Boy From..." and smooth as velvet in "The Man with the Horn." After years of being endlessly associated with one particular character and song, she's found a way to work that to her glorious advantage, first with a crazy, ingenious scat arrangement of "Adelaide's Lament" that doesn't get any less crazy or ingenious no matter how many times you listen to it, and then by letting us in on the song she used to audition for "Guys and Dolls," which is "Something Wonderful" but AS ADELAIDE. When that wacky character starts into this wistful ballad, you can't help laughing, but by the third line you've been sucked in to the beauty of the song and the heartbreak behind it. Her voice goes from squeaky to golden, and once again you're left wondering...how does she DO that? Give it another listen...maybe this time you'll figure it out.
