Music reviews of The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place

Music Review: affirming, unflinching, true
Rating: 4 Stars

"...some kind of message"?? You don't think this album has some kind of message, M. Torres? Wow.What this record most certainly does have is a message, and one that comes through very clearly; the theme that blasts through crystal-clear through every note and song is one of extracting maximal optimism out of the smallest, most infinitesimal points of light to be found in this life. It's all quite thoroughly programmatic, this album, and in its irrepressible hope, quite a contrast from the previous Explosions record, _Those Who Tell the Truth..._, which also has an overall feel but which is really quite "doomy." Actually, I think that other album holds up a bit better as a whole, for some reason: it just feels so unforced and organic, the way it flows all together. While the first two tracks on _Earth..._ are about the most overwhelming, stunningly fully-realized pieces of music you'll ever hear, overall I hear this record trying maybe just a mite too hard for its own good.

Programmatic overall, and programmatic with each individual song as well, to be sure. One can do a song-by-song analysis of such, and I think that's what I'll do. "First Breath After Coma" starts with a single, softly chiming guitar note that after a few bars quickens into double-time, apparently representing a heart monitor tracking a moribund pulse turned to life again. The song opens up like a flower, and you can almost hear the person waking up, drawing in breath, and experiencing and appreciating every little nuance and sensation of what it is to be alive. Absolutely spine-tingling.

"The Only Moment We Were Alone" is perhaps even better. Its title suggests an attempt to extract the greatest value from a fleeting but real moment of human connection, some tiny interaction that is enough to remind one that goodness is real and even to be found in some measure right next you, in one's fellow man. The song through its 10 minutes begins hesitant, tentative, longing, and goes all the way to absolutely triumphant at the beginning. Again, spine-tingling, the effect of this incredible musical expression without even the use of words.

"Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean" is about the Russian sub that went down a few years ago in waters too deep for rescue: the six days was how long the crew was alive before they ran out of air. The song seems to say "we're with you, you're not forgotten." At one point it even sounds as if another sub has discharged a lonely sonar ping in order to send this message. It's a pretty good song, but doesn't near reach the heights of the previous two. "Memorial," also good, especially as it exemplifies the quiet-loud dynamics that also worked so well for "The Only Moment We Were Alone." The title suggests this song may be intended as a postscript to the previous one. "Your Hand In Mine" is self-explanatory by the title, and is perhaps a little too obvious, a little too precious for its own good, but it works too.So this record is perhaps a bit front-loaded, and despite the fact that the first two songs rise above anything on the previous album, somehow I still prefer the other one overall. Trust me, though, if you're reading this and interested in Explosions in the Sky, you'll want to get both of this band's CDs.
