Music Review: Great sounding soundtrack to a great movie...9/10

Many years ago I watched and loved the English movie "Excalibur", about the legend of King Arthur. The music was rousing and exciting, especially for what I later found out was a piece called "O Fortuna" by Carl Orff. This piece is the only one with singing in it, I think...the rest is instrumental. Basically, since the movie version of this piece was so brilliant, I thought I'd get the soundtrack so I got that particular version of it. Movies often try to use music to manipulate your emotions or experience of the visuals. There might not be a more effective example of this than in the movie "Excalibur". Honestly, hearing "O Fortuna" just makes you fantasise about being a viking and going on a rampage!
Not exactly sure how much of the soundtrack is original and how much is 'borrowed' (as for "O Fortuna"), but it a very pleasant listen in any case. Adjectives like "courtly", "kingly", "bellicose", "majestic", "rousing" and "soothing" come to mind (obviously not all at the same time!).
Two of the tracks are over 10 minutes in length. One is less than 1 minute. Three are under a minute and a half in length.
The sound quality on the cd is brilliant...rich and detailed. The quiet passages are quiet yet lucid, and the crashing stuff is just that...loud and raucous.
Although I mainly knew "O Fortuna" from the movie, listening to this soundtrack many years later, some pieces rang bells with me, so to speak.
Musically, you get some totally symphonic tracks whilst some appear likenesses of ye olde folk music, especially for the pieces which make use of pipes.
Instruments include delicate strings, at times, as well as the harpsichord, perhaps.
Apart from the rousing "O Fortuna", I found this cd very relaxing to listen to.
N.B. I managed to buy this cd online for around US $24, not including postage. At the moment it is over double that price. You may want to shop around.
Recommendation:
Michael Nyman - The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover (soundtrack). Totally original soundtrack by the unique and distinctive sounding Nyman. Some tracks are repetitive, but in a good way, whilst others are soothing and relaxing too.
