Music Review: Simply the finest collection of sea songs ever compiled

This compilation of shanties and sailor songs is far superior to any collection I have ever heard. The combination of the traditional voices and instrumentation, coupled with the unvarnished, authentic lyrics makes this recording stand out clearly as the "real deal" and in a different league than the ubiquitous folksy shanty recordings that sound artificial and wimpy. A.L. Lloyd handles most of the lead vocals and really carries the whole show. All of the songs on "Blow Boys Blow," despite their rough authenticity, burn with excellent melodic and rhythmic brio. A must-buy.

Two of the greatest exponents of Celtic folksong, Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd rank among the finest interpreters of traditional music to have ever recorded. Any recording with these two greats performing together on record is a special event, an event that all lovers of folk music should cherish. Especially interesting is the fact that the two masters are joined by who would become the great American folklorist Ralph Rinzler onguitar, banjo and mandolin - the founding director of the Office of Folklife Programs at the Smithsonian Institution.
