Music reviews of Touch (Reis) (Dlx) (Dig)Music Review: After The Breakthrough Eurythmics Have No Regrets
Apparently recorded in a very short three week space in between touring this album had the awkward task of directly following up Eurythmics' huge commercial breakthrough Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (both of these albums were recorded the same year,by the way). Luckily for them momentum was definately their friend in this case and,not only that this album doesn't exactly indulge in cloning syndrome. The song construction quality on this album is actually a lot stronger than the previous album and everything from the rhythms,bass/horn interaction and the funkiness on some of the tunes is played up here whereas the last time around those qualities generally played second fiddle to the electronics. "HeComes The Rain Again" is actually a good example of their new sound;it's certainly as radio friendly as the title song of the previous album yet the synthesizers are different and dreamier sound and the combination between that and the orchestra "recorded in the hallway) as Annie herself put it creates a unique ambience. Songs like "Regrets","Cool Blue","Aqua" and the elongated closing cut (a minor hit) "Paint A Rumour" all showcase deeply grooving electronic/funk type tunes with some dissonant muted jazz trumpet floating in and out of the arrangements on occasion. "Who's That Girl" is another wonderful hit from the album again where the orchestra and electronics meld together, again in the case of a song with multiple parts on a song I don't think a lot of people outside Eurythmics fans may remember. "Right By Your Side" is another hit from the album that introduces (to the original albums anyway) a potent electronic reggae hybrid. "No Fear,No Hate,No Pain (No Broken Hearts)" produces a similar effect as well. Overall this album has many of the elements of the previous album but presents more of a variety of style and musical flavors and comes across as one of the most (successfully) musically original of the Eurythmics original albums. There's been a lot of talk about "inferior bonus tracks" here. Whatever you think of them here's what your getting:two avante garde sound collage type electronic pieces such as "You Take Some Lentils And You Take Some Rice" and "ABC (Freeform)". Those songs, even by standards of early Eurythmics are discordant and completely uncommercial, borrowing equally from middle east/North African rhythms and kraut rock. They likely won't produce much interest among pop music fans. Much more in that vein is an instrumental take on "Right By Your Side" called "Plus Something Else". Their cover version of "Fame",although sounding from a bit later in the 80's than this era is actually very underrated as it does recreate the song on the rhythmic level. I didn't even listen to the live cuts or the long version of "Paint A Rumour" because they just didn't seem like they really needed to be here and, from my experience sometimes live/extended versions of songs already on the album that add little to the originals all too often end up passing for valid bonus tracks. None of that takes away from the fact that this album is,to me anyway the strongest and most varied out of the first three Eurythmics album and more of a link in a chain in the stylistic progression of the band than one might actually think from it's closeness in release to the previous album.
