Music Review: Who Am I To Disagree?

It probably didn't take much thinking after Eurythmics avante garde sounding debut album In the Garden what elements worked and what didn't work in their sound. Wheras each song on that album generally evoked a different mood,usually one on the very chilly side this album actually finds them extending on the warm melody/cold production electronica technique that had defined Kraftwerk and early Human League. Only for this occasional not only are the melodies pumped up a great deal but the Motown style soul influence that Dave and Annie would work with later on was starting to become an exspect of my sound. In this case it was more an intregal element of the sound as opposed to it's primary flavor but all the same this gave the Eurythmics a sense of musical destinction that would make them yet another individual voice in a group of others in the new wave movement wanting their voices to be heard. The soulful/funk influence does make itself present on electro funk type songs such as a cover of "Wrap It Up" and the hit "This Is My House". Also you can hear it on the icy R&B closer "This City Never Sleeps". Another reviewer summed this album up overall as sort of like Sade meets Nico and,especially on the lyrical front I could'nt agree more. This album presents a lot more questions than it answers and a number of songs on this album have this alost lo-fi style arrangements met with very good production qualities-notably on the more synthesizer oriented electro/new wave pop tunes such as "Love Is A Stranger","I've Got An Angel","The Walk","Jennifer","If I Could Give You A Mirror" and "Somebody Told Me". Overall there's a consistant feel and quality over the course of the album and,of course the breakthrough hit title song emcompassess everything else done on this album in one three minute pop masterpiece. The bonus tracks on this album vary in sound and quality but all are interesting. The B sides both have totally different flavors. "Home Is Where The Heart Is" has a wistful caribbean pop flavor to it and "Monkey Monkey" evokes the avante garde flavors of their debut album. The 1991 remixes of "Sweet Dreams" and "Love Is The Stranger" (the former being the musically strong of the two) keep true to the originals in general but add more early 90's drum machines to the mix. As with many of these Eurythmics reissues there's an unreleased cover song here,in this case an updated 80's new wave version of Lou Reed's "Satellite Of Love". This second album really did a lot to change the Eurythmics from being one of the more oddball of the first 80's new wavers to being a band with both critical and commercial viability and began a string of very successful albums from this point on.

We have painstakingly collated the original master tapes and with the supervision of Dave Stewart, have remastered them to the highest standard possible. The sound quality is truly amazing and has to be heard to be believed.Each album will feature bonus material compiled with the assistance of Dave and Annie. Rare B sides never before released on CD, classic remixes and most excitingly, unreleased recordings, including a series of amazing cover versions plus live and acoustic performances.
Each reissue has been redesigned by Laurence Stevens Design | LSD the creative agency who has worked with the band throughout their entire career. All eight albums will be released in deluxe digipack packaging, and each album will be stickered to highlight the wealth of bonus material on each release. The 18 to 24 page booklets include refreshed front sleeve artwork, original single sleeves and most importantly previously unseen photography covering the bands whole career. Phill Savidge renowned PR guru and Eurythmics fan has, through various interviews with Dave and Annie, written sleeve notes for each album. Insightful, provactive and ?unput downable?, they help bring the bands incredible story and music alive.
Singer Annie Lennox and guitarist Dave Stewart first received notice in the Tourists, scoring a big U.K. hit in 1979 with a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You." Emerging as the Eurythmics in 1981, Lennox's cabaret-tinged vocal style and Stewart's left-of-center songs took a while to mesh, but when they finally did, with the haunting, hook-filled 1983 No. 1 single, "Sweet Dreams" (accompanied by one of the most striking videos ever made), the two found themselves rocketing to stardom. This, their second album, also features their initial British hit, "Love Is a Stranger," and an icy-cool cover of Sam and Dave's r&b classic, "Wrap It Up." --Billy Altman
This edition has been digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes by Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart, with input from collaborator Annie Lennox. In addition, there are seven bonus tracks: a mixture of b-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased material (notably a cover of Lou Reeds' beautiful "Satellite of Love"). The packaging is a six-panel digipack redesign orchestrated by Laurence Stevens Design, the firm who art-directed all the original releases, while the thick booklets contain rare photos and insightful, new sleeve notes.
