Music Review: The Miracle Of The Eurythmics

One of the things that's been said about this album over the years is that it was Eurythmics attempt at an arena rock type album. To some extent that's very true because the emphasis is is on heavier guitar riffing than even before and there's a lot of intense,powerful singing on the part of Annie Lennox. Taken as a whole however this album is very much still a potent and varied very much in fact in the spirit of Be Yourself Tonight. As a matter of fact the main differences here lay in the fact that the electronics are almost completely stripped from the production and rather make any concerted effort to blend different styles together you will find both rock n roll and soul/R&B on this album seperated out,in this case between sides (or halves for CD purposes). The hit "Missionary Man" as well as "Thorn In My Side" and "The Last Time" are the rockier of the songs on this album but all the same are set to bass heavy dance rhythms. The best description I can give to these songs are 80's dance-rock with a few mild neo psychedelic twists now and again. This half of the album is capped off with the orchestral pop ballad "The Miracle Of Love",a more passionate type of song than the usually close and intimate sound the Eurythmics tended to give off. The songs "Let's Go","Take Your Pain Away","A Little Of You" and "In This Town" are all a lot more R&B oriented than the songs from the beginning of the album in as much as the strip away a lot of the rock theatrics of those songs. The album ends on one of the albums more intimate notes with the poetic nostalgia of "I Remember You". It's a big,lushy orchestrated ballad somewhat in the spirit of Prince's song Purple Rain. It's one of the most memorable tunes here and...well memorability may be one of the factors in why this album was a somewhat underachiever commercially than it's predeccesors. Many of these songs are catchy in a certain why but it's one of those albums that relies more on sound and arrangement. All too many of these songs lack the level of melody and harmonic construction that made the band so revered only a year or so earlier. The bonuses are mostly extended mixes but "Revenge 2" and the oddball electronica take of "My Guy" (not the Mary Wells hit put the Temptations song sung from a heterosexual womans viewpoint) are the only indications here of the Eurythmics' more electronic leanings. To some it must've appeared Eurythmics had sort of peaked but all the same it was not to last album they did even though it was just a mild step down from the previous album. At the very least it did show a degree of innovation and there were still many musical places to go after this.

This edition has been digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes by Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart, with input from collaborator Annie Lennox. In addition, there are six bonus tracks: a mixture of b-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased material (notably a cover of Mary Wells' classic "My Guy").
