Music Review: Annie And David's Time Had Come

Often times a debut album offers a subtle indication of a band or soloists basic sound. However other times it winds up being like a television show pilot that is heavily reworked and it isn't very indivative of the sound they'll be eventually known for. The latter is definately the case for the debut album by the Eurythmics. These are the same people who a year and a half later will firmly establish their sound with Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) and,all the same this 1981 debut owes absolutely nothing to that album. Dave Stewart was direct from his experience with the band The Tourists and neither he nor Annie Lennox has developed their collective persona on any front on this album. You can even tell by the cover,presented the duo's image as that of a somewhat goulish version of the English "mod" look and interestingly enough the music in the album very much follows the same pattern. The opening song "English Summer" sets the tone for the album generally. The music is not very melodic overall and what melody is there tends to be on the dark side. Annie,for all her well renowned vocal prowess sings in a whispery,almost invisable sounding voice on these songs and on songs such as "Caveman Head" especially there are strong ovetones of the post punk era with a lot of atonal guitars,HAM radio sounding vocal backups (they tend to be too unintelligable to qualify as backup vocals in the proper sense of the word) and a lot of very discordant rhythms. This is best described as a cross between the chilly electronics of Kraftwerk and the anxiety ridden tenseness and grooves of Talking Heads. You can hear more of their sound in "Sing Sing",sung by Annie in French and looking far ahead in the Eurythmic's stylisitic progression as it's the only song present here with an almost funky soul flavor to it. "Belinda" is one of the harder rocking Eurythmics songs and "Revenge",later used as the title of their fifth album is about the closest this album has to a radio friendly pop song,and it isn't particularly poppy either. As if that isn't enough the bonus cuts actually add to this feeling. "Le Sinestre" and "Heartbeat Heartbeat" are very atonal and discordant to the extreme and it's not a surprise they wound up as B-sides. The remaining songs are (mostly) live versions of songs already on this album that....even on stage remain as aloof as the studio versions including the non album song "4/4 Leather",another harder rocking type song. Even though a certain electronic chilliness would remain over the course of the following two Eurythmics albums but there would e a contrast with Annie Lennox's expressive singing and rather welcoming melodic exchanges. That was the combination that made them famous and duely revered and it's just not present here. For what it is,it's not bad. But even if it's their first album,I would'nt recommend it as the first full lengh Eurythmics album one should pick up as it presents something closer to a false start than a true beginning.
