Music Review: One Word, Kee Marcello!

Okay, so that's two words, but let's not play semantics. The bottom line is the only "real" reason to buy this album is to hear Kee's phenomenal guitar solos. People love to toss around the words "under rated" when they're talking about their favorite 80's guitar player, and it's usually way over used. Anyone who was around in the 80's knows almost all of the really hot guitar players were over exposed, not under rated in the least. I have heard this under rated tag applied to Jake E. Lee, Warren Demartini, Reb Beach, Nuno Bettencourt, Jeff Watson, etc. To that I say, "are you kidding me?!" Those guys were on every 80's guitar magazine cover, with 100's of articles to boot. The only true under rated players of the 80's from someone who lived on Hollywood blvd in the 80's (me) and was heavy into the metal scene were: John Sykes, Gary Moore, Ulri Jon Roth, Harry K. Cody, and Kee Marcello, period. Of those five I would say Kee was the least known and had the least amount of exposure. That's a shame, because he was probably more technically proficient than any of them. To say he has monster chops is an understatement. Just listen to the solo in Just the Beginning where he goes from super wide stretched lines that sound like tapping, to a beautiful diminished arpeggio, to a flowing, outside sounding legato run, to super fast blues licks, and then a neat intervocalic sequence to end the solo. Thrilling, it will take your breath away.
Otherwise the album itself is straight up 80's glam metal, meaning not a lot of substance and fairly basic song structures. The album was incredibly over produced which didn't help matters. That doesn't mean the songs are bad per se, just nothing real memorable. The album also sold poorly, especially compared to the record sales of their previous album, the Final Countdown. There was no strong hit on the album like the title song from the Final Countdown, and it received very little airplay and MTV rotation. This was to be Kee's one and only recording with Europe. I have no idea what the man has done since then, but if you have not heard of Kee, and don't own this album but are a fan of 80's shred guitar, buy it, now. Even if you hate glam metal buy it and skip to the solo section in the songs and you'll still get your money's worth.
