Music reviews of RCA Opera Treasury - Verdi: Aida / Leinsdorf, Price, Domingo, Milnes, Bumbry, et al

Music Review: The Perfect Aida: The Very Best
Rating: 5 Stars

The Red Seal RCA Label has produced simply the best opera performances on record and this Aida stands out as the best possible in the many Aidas out there on the market. The favorable reviews by other critics attest to the beauty and grandeur of this unsurpassed recording starring the ultimate Verdi diva of the 20th century Leontyne Price. "My costume for Aida was my skin" Leontyne Price said, referring to the fact that as an African-American woman, she could fully relate to the charachter of Aida- an Ethiopian black slave/princess. Leontyne Price was the very first black opera superstar, opening the doors to generations of black females in opera which would include Martina Arroyo, Jessye Norman, Kathleen Battle, Barbara Hendricks and Denyce Graves. Price was singing opera at a time when the Civil Rights movement was in full swing and the Metropolitan Opera had just allowed contralto Marian Anderson to finally sing in the minor role of Ulrica in Verdi's Un Ballo. But Leontyne Price took the opera world by storm, singing the same repertoire of Maria Callas, with a huge and dramatic but gorgeous voice, singing all the classic roles- Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Mozart heroines, Isolde, Desdemona, Lady Macbeth and a plethora of other characters in the opera universe. As Aida, she is unsurpassed, capturing the spirit of Aida, the spirit of the composer's music and interpreting the role from aria to aria and scena to scena like no other. From her opening aria "Ritorna Vincitor" to her confrontation/duets with Amneris (and Price and Bumbry two black divas at their peak in a showdown is amazing to hear) to her final melancholy, wistful "O Terra Adio" is an amazing performance.

This recording is the best and on Amazon.com you can even buy it for an affordable price in the used section. Why is it that this studio recording is overlooked and even neglected ? The later recording under the baton of George Solti is for some reason more beloved by the critics and recommended by such sources as NPR's Opera Guide. Solti, however good, makes the opera far too Wagnerian in sound and although Aida is grand opera, it is closer to the Paris Grand Opera tradition and suffused with Italian bel canto lyric subtlety. Aida must be sung in a grand way but in a BEAUTIFUL WAY. The melodic line must be gorgeous Italian in style, as should the other characters- Radames, Amneris and the Pharaoh Amonasro. Karajan's Aida- which stars Renata Tebaldi and Carlo Bergonzi, two formidable Italian voices, still falls under the same huge, overblown Wagnerian spectacle that Solti produced. Opera lovers everywhere, this Aida is the one to get, this is the perfect Aida. Placido Domingo is in his prime here, in fact all the singers are, with the exception perhaps of the slowly aging baritone Sherill Milnes. But even he causes a sensation and delivers without disappointment as a fabulous Pharaoh- with a paternal Verdi baritone voice, marked with nobility and grandeur. Grace Bumbry truly understood the role of Amneris having sung her many times, providing the role with depth and integrity. Amneris is no foil to Aida, she is equally as powerful a heroine and she should never be relegated to the potrayal of a villainess. She is a woman who loves Radames passionately and intensely, and could have had him had not Aida come along. Bumbry uses every possible color in her vocal palette and dramatic arsenal to make Amneris a role that is praiseworthy and indeed her most glorious mezzo-soprano role.

Domingo once again impressed me as Radames. I keep telling my opera connoisseur friends that he reminds me of a latter 20th century Franco Corelli for to me, both tenors had a similar technique of taking on the BIG ROLES with more lyric and subdued passion, but with bursting passion and masculinity nonetheless. Sometimes the roles are too heavy indeed for both Domingo and Corelli and as Radames both have never reached the larger high register of Pavoratti and Vickers. But Domingo, like Corelli, was no razzle-dazzle novelty tenor like Pavoratti or Vickers. What they lacked in stentorian volume they made up for in character drama. Domingo, with his passionate Spanish soul, easily becomes the romantic hero and a warrior. His rendition of Celeste Aida is perfection, and his duets with Aida and his ensembles with Amneris and the Pharaoh are unmatched. He is Radames to me, every step of the way.

Conductor Erich Leinsdorf is doing a fine job with this music. He truly understood Verdi's original concept- Aida as a slightly French style Italian bel canto grand opera. It is an opera that is in many ways like the preceeding Don Carlos. In fact Don Carlos was a warm-up to Aida, which if Verdi had written only that would have still been enough to make him a legendary composer. Aida's music is Italian, make no mistake, for Verdi, more than Puccini composed with the passion and folk-melody of his beloved homeland Italy. In his operas, heroes stand up for their rights, kings and other "imperial" opressors are often viewed as baddies and corrupt. In this opera, we get the spirit of rebellion and heroism from Radames, standing up for his love of Aida, who is the enemy, and defying the code of the Pharaoh. All this patriotism, stemming from Verdi's own dislike for the Risorgimento Austrian rule of Italy, is evident in Aida. But he, clever fellow, did not forget this is supposed to be Egypt. And Egypt it is in the music as well. The chorus and chanting are VERY VERY EGYPTIAN in theme, harkening to ancient rituals of deity worship and incantation by priests of Rah, Isis and Osiris. I can actually hear the peaceful Nile river flowing in the music (in the Overture and various parts of the opera in moments of quietness) Pomp and circumstance, in Egyptian flair, is written into the famous Triumphal March. The finale is so heartbreaking so moving, so spiritual that it is to me Verdi's closest work to Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. Radames and Aida are eternal lovers, finding a peace inside the death/eternity of the Pyramid than they could ever find in the living world of enemy, politics and worship of gods and pharaohs.

Make no mistake. This is the only Aida you need to hear if you want THE REAL AIDA. Not Karajan, not Solti, not Zubin Mehta, not any other version will ever surpass this recording. Recorded in 1970-1971 or early 70's, this is the best without a doubt. Each singer is giving it their best and they don't disappoint at all. You will cry and you will adore this perfect, perfect Aida. The greatest Aida of them all. RITORNA VINCTOR! VINCITOR PLACIDO DOMINGO AND LEONTYNE PRICE!! Look also for the recordings of Il Trovatore on RCA Red Seal label also with Domingo and Price and the outstanding and indestructibale baritone Sherill Milnes. These singers also recorded (under RCA) La Forza Del Destino and Tosca.
