Music Review: Return to form

Who'd have thought? Me, buying again an Eric Burdon and being completely satisfied with it? The last "real" album had been the sadly forgotten or reviled The Last Drive (sometimes I wonder why do critics are so lazy, easy to say anything he has done after War is crap, but the fans know and I would recommend, if they existed at all in CD form, Survivor and Darkness-Darkness), 24 years ago! I came to know of it quite casually and I admit the shame of listening to some preview (don't get it wrong, after 10 seconds of Once Upon a Time I was convinced to buy it). What to say about the album? I give it 5 stars comparing it to contemporary records, it's very good to listen again a real singer who doesn't give an inch and puts all his passion in the interpretation of his or someone else's songs. Of course cover versions are his forte and Leonard Cohen's My Secret Life shines magnificently (and so do the totally unforeseeable cover of Talking Heads' Heaven), but what surprises and pleases even more is that his own songs are so good and so consistent, whether they are blues, soul or simply music. A comparison with recent Van Morrison stuff comes to mind, I always thought they're the two best white/black singers, but despite the similarities, apart from the first period (Animals and Them) they always chose different paths and Van has proved superior as a musician altogether, and it's certainly not a criticism to say that at times it sounds like Eric Burdon sings Van. Still there are certain spots that only he can touch with his vocals and this time also the arrangements keep up with the marvellous voice, so what you have is quite as good as anything he has done in his best years, except the fact that, of course, there is no innovation of flights of fantasy as in bewildering albums such as Winds of Change or Love Is (from is New Animals days), The Blackman's Burdon (with War). But how could you expect that? Let's rejoice for the "return" of Eric "The Blackman" Burdon and let's hope he doesn't stop here.
