Music reviews of Every One of UsMusic Review: I used to have this one, and it's good to have it again
In 1984 I bought a cassette tape called "Once Upon A Time". I was feeling rather adventurous being 17, and gave it a listen. From the first few seconds of "St. James Infirmary" it gave a harking back to the bluesy sound that only Eric Burdon can produce, but this had more edge to it...more meat on the bones. I checked the inlay card, and found out that most of the material came from 1968, so I'm like let's check the rest of this album out. Mind you "Uppers and Downers" was silly; I guess they needed filler( it was like the time I heard John Kay and Steppenwolf singing the boy scout song "Be Prepared"). However it comes back rather splendidly with "Year Of The Guru" a rather insane song about following a blind leader, and getting yourself screwed over. I guess he was hearing reports from his contemperaries about the Marharishi in 68, and so he did a tongue-in-cheek song about the result that the Marharishi had on people. "Serenade" is a excellent instrumental piece. Whenever I hear the song I seem to escape to a different place just about everytime. One time I can see myself in Mexico looking over the volcanoes, another walking the dark streets of New Orleans French Quarter, and still another time in the pyramids of Egypt squaring off with the Jackyl god. It's a pleasant guitar piece to listen to, and yet so scary. The one song here I feel is interesting, and yet at the same time I wonder if I could stand to listen to all almost 19 minutes of the song, and that's "New York-1963"/"America-1968". I read in the liner notes of this album that Burdon's first trip to America was in 1963, and he was awestruck with everything there. Well isn't that how we all can be when we're somewhere we've only read about heard about? The first half of the song Burdon seems to sing praise to America, but then the second half he's condemming America. Well in a way we all did, and still do to this day. Sometimes when we eat of the sometimes forbidden fruit of knowledge our eyes are opened. After all Solomon would write in Ecclesiastes "He that increases knowledge increases sorrow." In 1963 after Kennedy was assassinated America became very uncertain, and questionable about what was going on around them as they saw the country going into a war that had no reason to be entered, and the morals were being put up to debate as television began showing more of the dark side of the underbelly of the country with the racial tensions of the south, riots in L.A., the youth were begining to wonder who they were?, and so were others. However, again would I want to sit through almost 19 minutes of what happened? I know some of what happened, and I plug on to read more, so I can begin to sort out my own morals, and what I want to believe. To close "White Houses" was a song I rejected 12 years ago when I first heard it; not any more as it's a angst filled song with a message for everyone to remember to not get comfortable, but to explore, and learn from life, and people.
