Music reviews of And Winter Came

Music Review: Winter Came with a bang!
Rating: 5 Stars

1. And Winter Came...
In one word: NICE
I'm not a huge fan of AWC. It's a nice song, sure...but it's also Midnight Blue. The vocal additions are a great added effect, but it's the new, full richness that pushes this song up a point for me.

2. Journey of the Angels
In one word: SOARING
JOTA is the first song in which we get a taste of Eithne's newfound vocal majesty. Her voice has matured to new levels and she can control the tone quality and the richness with the precision of a finely-tuned thermometer. The lyrics are nice and Christmas-y. The way Eithne sings "angels" is lovely, as well.

3. White Is in the Winter Night
In one word: GLEEFUL
WIITWN is surely the song most likely to put Enya on the radio every year during the holidays. It's upbeat, peppy, and gleeful. Green is in the mistletoe! Red is in the holly! This song gives me powerful, visible chills when it gets to the end. The last lines--"Have you heard the choir singing? / Glory! Glory! Glory!"--never fail to send a shiver down my spine. A fantastic song overall.

4. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
In one word: HAUNTING
I knew OCOCE would be wonderful when I heard the very first clip on the EPK at www.enya.com. I am definitely not disappointed! The one word to describe this word is haunting or chilling because of the vocals. Eithne has returned in this song to the eerie quality of past songs like "Exile" and "Evening Falls," and it works perfectly for this song. The random choral vocalizations and "Gaude!" explosions contribute to the haunting quality of this song and often give me chills. The use of English and Latin together appeals to my linguistic obsession very nicely, as well. One nice, tiny detail in the effects department is the use of the bell on the very last note, which is the release of the last "Emmanuel" (approximately at 3:22). Brilliant work.

5. Trains and Winter Rains
In one word: CHANGE
TAWR was the first taste of "And Winter Came..." that fans got, and I attached to it instantly. The pizzicato in the strings always adds a tasteful effect to Enya's music, and the percussion (particularly the timpani [I believe that's what they are]). The "da da da da" eighth notes in the background help push the song forward. The chorus, when the tone goes from dark to light, is a great release of the chords that warms me from the inside out. The lyrics fit the music perfectly.

6. Dreams Are More Precious
In one word: NEO-TRADITIONAL
DAMP was one of the first full songs of "And Winter Came..." that was available. It's a great song that speaks to more traditional carols lyrically (like "Adeste, Fideles" in my opinion). This is surely the richest song she's ever done. The lines "and I'll keep watch for you / until the dawn is breaking through / until the morning wakens you" are very poetic and rhythmic.

7. Last Time by Moonlight
In one word: MOVING
I love LTBM more than any Enya song I've heard (i.e. all of them). The chorus is surely the most brilliant part of the song, but it's all fantastic. It's very reminiscent of WSTHH from the musical accompaniment. Its powerful lyrics provide a mixture of sorrow and hope at the same time, both condemning a relationship ("but nothing is forever / not even / the starlight at midnight / not even the moonlight") and adding a touch of optimism in the chorus ("oooh, remember this / for no-one knows / the way love goes"). Definitely my favourite on the album and my favourite Enya song to date.

8. One Toy Soldier
In one word: CHILDLIKE
OTS really achieves Enya's goal of bringing people back to the simple times of childhood, if only for 3:54. That alone earns this song most of its points, yet there's another aspect that pushes it up even further. The lyrics tell a story sequentially, almost as a fairy tale narrates. A small toy soldier with a broken drum needs his drum fixed, or he can't play in the morning to announce the arrival of Christmas! How can he keep the beat of marching feet with a broken drum? The soldier is deeply distressed about this in his heart, yet by the end of the song, the problem is resolved. Simply delightful!

9. Stars and Midnight Blue
In one word: ROMANTIC
This is one of the best songs on the album by far. The vocals in SAMB are--without a doubt in my mind--the best Eithne's voice has ever sounded. It's rich, full, and compassionate. It oozes emotion like the icing in a layer cake. The lyrics are a completely different realm of beauty. I have always felt that Roma's lyrics have never quite measured up to her poetry from the two editions of WSTHH. This isn't a bad thing, as it's difficult to make poetry align with a premade melody. Yet these lyrics are moving, passionate, romantic, and poetic. "Once you filled my hands with roses / then you gave your heart to me / when a kiss ahd followed this / love was meant to be." "You have lost yourself in dreaming / I have lost myself in you / now we lie beneath the sky; / stars and midnight blue." Sheer and utter romantic love. I love it so much, in fact, that it may soon take over the number one overall Enya song spot on my favourites list.

10. The Spirit of Christmas Past
In one word: MELODIC
The melody in TSOCP is very delightful. Her voice develops yet another quality, and her voice just leaks optimism like air from a tire. The lyrics aren't particularly enchanting, but they match the melody perfectly in compensation. There are still a few lines that are great, though, like "So, let the shadows go / and drift away like snow." Beautiful song!

11. My! My! Time Flies!
In one word: HAPPY
You can truly hear Eithne smiling in MMTF. It's a great song with great percussion. The guitar parts are interesting (to say the very least), yet not unappealing. They are very new, however, and very different. The references to past pop culture is a very nice addition in the lyric, akin to OF's "with Rob Dickens at the wheel" and "Ross and his dependencies." The vocals are full of falls and rises similar to glissandos and reverse glissandos. The ending is fantastic.

12. Oíche Chiúin [Chorale]
In one word: CHOIR
OCC is the way OC should've been done the first time! I enjoy the original version; however, it has been released upwards of eighty times in the US (perhaps an exaggeration, but you get the point), and I am somewhat tired of seeing the original on everything almost as a filler track. This reworking is a brilliant production with full vocals and a true choir-of-one sound.

THE PHYSICAL ALBUM:
The album is done very tastefully and professionally. It comes shrink-wrapped and with a red sticker on the wrapping. On the sticker is printed: "BRAND NEW ALBUM featuring "TRAINS AND WINTER RAINS" and "WHITE IS IN THE WINTER NIGHT / Also features traditional holiday songs, including a new version of "SILENT NIGHT (OÍCHE CHIÚIN [CHORALE])" / [...]" (all in black except for "BRAND NEW ALBUM" in white) superimposed on the white "enya" logo. The text breaks to leave room for the "enva" part of the logo.0
The disc itself is light blue in the US (Crayola would call it robin's-egg-blue or sky blue) with the "enya" logo in white. "And Winter Came..." is written right below the logo and to the left, before the "y" of "enya." The back of the album features the track listin in a nice, clear font in dark blue or black.
The booklet has the "enya" logo in metallic red, which is a delightful touch. The fonts are all clear and crisp. I think the lyrics are written in very dark blue, but it may be black. I'm very, VERY glad to see the lyrics in here. The colours of this release work very well together--a treat that hasn't been seen since ADWR. The pictures are gorgeous and very high quality. My favourite is opposite the last page of lyrics (featuring TSOCP, MMTF, and OCC). It's the image from the Norwegian (IIRC) site of Enya in the purple dress looking up at the camera from a tile floor with flower petals all around. I'm very glad to see the line, "Thanks also to all our Moderators, both past and present." It's great to see Enya commending the hard work Nigello and TC do to keep us in line! Also, all three of the Trio's websites [...] are listed.
