Music Reviews of A Day Without RainMusic Review: Enya's best so far Rating: 5 Stars
This is the Enya album that turned me on to her music. It is the best of the best - which unfortunately for me became the standard by which I have judged all her other music. All of the tracks are excellent except perhaps "Tempus Vernum" which seems like the requisite "Chanting Clone Warriors on Parade" track that she has put on several of her CD's - still an interesting track though. I had no interest in New Age music until I heard this CD and Lorenna McKennitt's, "Book of Secrets". (I still have no interest in worshiping the creation rather than the Creator - but the music, the melodies of these artists can't be ignored) I have listened to this CD till my ears dissolved. Since then I have purchased other Enya CD's but this remains the best. Perhaps the only criticism that one can make of Enya's music is that it sometimes drifts in the direction of mindless vapidity. Nonetheless the haunting lushness of the melodies and the quality of Enya's vocal work still make this CD a "5" - and on this CD the lyrics of many of the songs would stand alone as works of poetry - which is not as true of her earlier CD's. BUT BEWARE ! I've heard is a "disco" version of the 3rd track "Only Time" being played on the radio. It stinks. Like some bozo who pours white sugar on a fruit salad thinking it needs to be sweeter. I totally don't recommend that version of this CD if such a thing is available. "A Day Without Rain" will probably become a classic. In time you will no doubt hear many renditions of these melodies done by other artists. I'd recommend it for almost anyone. Also the CD comes with a good booklet that contains all the lyrics.
Music Review: A Day Without Rain ~ Enya Rating: 5 Stars
When Enya became a singer on her own, it was a great idea. I'm not saying Clannad has bad music (I love their music), but they do well on their own and Enya has such great music, all of her albums are worth adding to your collection.
At first when I heard Enya, it was always in the car - my dad played it. I always thought Enya was a band or something - I didn't even know the name that well. Then I was given this CD for my birthday, and I loved it. I then started listening to all of Enya's music more and more.
Though this CD is only about a half hour long, it's worth it to buy it. The songs are all great.
1. A Day Without Rain; Is instrumental. But it's very pretty.
2. Wild Child; "Ever take the time, ever stop and listen, ever feel alive, and you've nothing missing. You don't need a reason, let the day go on and on".
3. Only Time; Who can tell, only time. This is a great song.
4. Tempus Vernum; I'm not sure what language this is in, but it sounds very neat and dark.
5. Deora Ar Mo Chroi; is in Spanish, and is beautiful.
6. Flora's Secret; is a song about love, and one of the best on the track.
7. Fallen Embers; is a pretty, slow, song.
8. Silver Inches; is instrumental, but the way it 'bounces' makes it such a fun song to listen to again and again.
9. Pilgrim; is a pretty song, but it is slow and can seem boring.
10. One By One; is another song about love, and is a pretty and fun song.
11. Lazy Days; doesn't everybody want to go back to their lazy days? This sun is so fun, it's great.
Music Review: Music of my dreams. Rating: 4 Stars
I've grown up listening to Enya. When I was but a wee thing, strapped in the carseat of my dad's van, he'd pop in her older album "Shepherd Moons", and my infant brain heard, processed, and retained.Fourteen years later her music has grown to be a part of me, and this album really keeps it going. I agree with the fact that it is far too short--I want more! But really, there isn't a single track I don't enjoy. Quality over quantity, I suppose, though more of a good thing could actually be better here. As for highlights, my favorites include "Wild Child", "Flora's Secret", "Silver Inches", and "One by One". "Wild Child" is nostalgia for me, almost symbolic to my growing up with Enya's music. Playful and innocent, like the mind of a child, running and playing without a care in the world. Being a helpless romantic, "Flora's Secret" is upbeat and happy--describing the amazing, indescribable feeling of love. Simply beautiful. "Silver Inches" is a short, dreamlike instrumental, with synthed strings, I believe. It never ceases to give me a vivid image of flying on the back of some mythical beast over a beautiful green land (so I have strange fantasies). Finally, my favorite of the album--"One by One". I listened to this song for about three hours straight, on repeat, as I read the Seventh Tower series (shameless plug: check that out, too). A rather sad yet hopeful song about the end of a romantic relationship, yet love still goes on in different forms. All in all, a wonderful album worth buying for any Enya fan. *heart heart heart*
Music Review: You'll feel cheated Rating: 2 Stars
I have been an Enya fan now for 7 years, and his is quite possibly her least musically creative album to date. Many of the songs on her album echo of songs on her other album Memory of Trees. The wide varity of musical instrument just isn't there like in her past albums. One song starts off pretty much the same as Tea House Moon, that track is # 7. Track number #4 echos of Pax Decorum on the Memory of Trees also. I respect her as an artist, but I would have much rather waited another year for a more postive outcome of this album. This CD I payed $20, I felt like the album is worth only $10 because the feeling of repetiveness I got from listening to it. Collectively the album lenght is only 34 minutes 20 seconds long. It's rather short for $20. Personally after listening to this album I would have taken it back to the store where I purchased it, but this is Enya and I feel like I can't do that. As for variety of music on this album again, I think many of the harder rock/alternitive groups do better in this catagory, even though the lyrics are rather screamed and whispered than actually sung. I do have to give her credit on Flora's Secret and Wild Child in which the lyrics are well writen. The instramental aspect is repetive in peaks and lows. I would rather anyday listen to her Memory of Trees or Shepherd Moons albums for the variety and quality. Save yourself the money buying this album or ask someone to get it for you as a stocking stuffer for the Holidays. The money out of my own wallet wasn't worth it. I look forward to her next album because no matter what it will be an improvement over this piece of art.
Music Review: Enya shines! Rating: 5 Stars
OK, so Enya uses the same style of layered vocals and synthesizer accompaniment on this recording as on her previous offerings. Who do you want her to sound like, Madonna or Celine Dion? This listener doesn't and is thrilled (and relieved) that her style hadn't changed. How can you improve on an original style that has so impacted New Age music and caught the attention of the music industry? The discerning listener will discover that "A Day Without Rain" is quite probably Enya's best recording yet. Every song shines, and her ethereal, pristine vocals communicate a refined purity and sacred ambiance you won't find in other "popular" music being recorded today. I'm thrilled that she has remained true to herself, in spite of her commercial success, and has produced another work of art that has the repeat appeal destined to ensure another bestseller (and perhaps win another Grammy?). Four years was a long time to wait, but Enya's songwriting talent shines in original tunes that are destined to become classics. These are simply the best tunes she has ever composed! There is lighthearted frivolity here ("Wild Child," "One by One," "Lazy Days"). There is romance ("Only Time," "Fallen Embers"). There are wise insights ("Pilgrim," "Only Time"). There are strong instrumentals ("Day Without Rain, "Silver Inches"). There is simply beautiful singing ("Deora Ar Mo Chroi," "Fallen Embers," "Pilgrim."). This recording is a winner from the first thrilling second to the last. A rare gem.
