Music Review: Some Lovely Moments

I'll say at the beginning that movie soundtracks don't always make for good listening. The jolts and explosive sounds are appropriate when watching the movie. If you like to hear them by themselves, you may like this just fine. I find them quite jarring. One track is really pleasing and I could listen to it over and over. That one is called "Circunderunt me fluctus mortis." "Playing Alone" is also compelling. These are free of the sound effects that I find so obtrusive. I have a music editor on my computer and I edited the jolts out of some of the tracks. I put the whole thing together, leaving out a few of the tracks. The resulting CD is about 35 minutes of lovely music.

The track layout is semisatirical, with such titles as "Sighs and Sighs," "Threatening Cries," and "Romantic Pollution", but the relentlessly suspenseful mood gets old quickly. One highlight--reminiscent of music fitting for the famous silent film--is the organ solo on "Playing Alone." There are more than enough soporific moments, but Morricone's unabashed love of sentimental melodies, heavily orchestrated melancholia, and occasional outbursts of violence are ideal for the subject. Here, as in many of his later efforts, Morricone can evoke a distinct sense of déjà vu, being that he likes to borrow from his past work. --Joseph Lanza
