Music reviews of Voyageur

Music Review: Do not miss this "Voyageur"
Rating: 5 Stars

Enigma blew me away with their fourth album "The Screen Behind The Mirror" from early 2000. In many ways, it was a whole new change in style from anything that they had ever done before then and marked the beginning of a totally new era in their career. I have no idea where to begin on explaining how stunning and deep their fifth album "Voyageur" really is. This album is a whole new chapter in Enigma's arc of music and in ways, a whole new Enigma may be emerging. The album doesn't having any Gregorian Chants nor does it have a lot of ethnic samples like their previous albums did. "Voyageur" does use some of the styles of "Turn Around" from the LSD collection but while that song while pretty good, it was relatively unremarkable by Enigma standards, this album improves that style. I completely and totally object to all the negative reviews that I've been reading on here about them not bringing Gregorian Chants on here at all. Enigma has never sounded better. This album did not disappoint me the slightest.

"From East To West" begins the voyage into the future with a warm and moody ambience along with the trademark flute intro melody but instead of being a 1 to 2 minute intro like it was on their previous albums, it instead becomes a haunting and moody song with Euro-style dance beats combined with a dark and moody New Age melody. In ways, Enigma break the mold by making the first track on an album being a full length song instead of just an intro. The title track is dynamite. It begins with alternative like guitars but then becomes a highly edgy and energetic dance song with a very strong Euro dance tinge to it. The throbbing bass guitar rhythms combined with strobe light voice effects give the song a very eerie feel. In some ways, it reminds me of what the techno group Underworld did on their 1994 masterpiece "Dubnobasswithmyheadman". "Incognito" is one of my favorite songs on this album. It begins with a male accapella intro but then becomes an intense and menacing song which in a way I could describe as some of the best trance music I've ever listened to. If you listen closely you can hear small excerpts from Enigma's 1990 hit "Sadeness" buried in the background. Pretty scary stuff I must say. "Page of Cups" begins with unsettling sound effects that remind me of a large number of bats or possessed seagulls flying overhead and a light tracery beat that gradually speeds up and then the birdlike sounds die off and the song becomes an odd and mellow song with a slightly old school hip-hop oriented style blended with electronic New Age atmospheres. "Boum-Boum" is absolutely awesome. The song is a highly danceable and very ominous song with crunching bass lines and awesome beat. The lyrics, I must agree with many, are quite cheesy, especially by Enigma standards but the music itself with its thundering beats and intense atmosphere completely overrides the cheese factor. This is one of my favorite songs on this album. "Total Eclipse of the Moon" is a joyous and cheerful song with a relatively sunny atmosphere and enchanting violin and Cretu on vocals. The only thing that irritates me is that the song is so short and ends abruptly just as you're starting to enjoy it. "Look of Today" is a very Euro dance oriented dance track. This track, while a very good song, comes dangerously close to being a generic Euro dance number. Still it's a good song but sounds more like it belongs on a remix album. "In The Shadow, In the Light" is a haunting and rich song with distorted vocals from Mr. Cretu done to an excellent degree. The melody is haunting and intense yet calming at the same time like the quiet before the storm. "Shadow, Light" wonderfully merges into the ninth track entitled "Weightless". This is a wonderful brief track. The song begins with haunting percussion and then a minor note melody and haunting echoing vocals from Cretu. Unfortunately the song is very short and ends just as you start to enjoy it and thus it feels sort of unfinished. "The Piano" is a haunting and enchanting instrumental with a sunny and dreamy, and lush sound to it and piano playing and no lyrics. The ending merges perfectly into the next track. The final song on here "Following The Sun" is the best closing song I've heard on any of Enigma's albums so far as of now. It's a very intense and a highly enthralling blend of sunny and stormy atmospheres all meshed in one. This song reminds me to a degree of "Return To Innocence" as it has a very similar melody and bright but haunting mood to it. The song though fades from the sunny cheerful mood and melts into a very dark and spooky dark cloud ambience that reminds me of Delerium's darker material. It almost evokes images of when one's following the sun, only to see it disappear behind dark storm clouds up ahead and into uncertain darkness, leaving one to wonder where Enigma will take us on our next voyage. This brings the album to such a haunting and dark close.

"Voyageur" is a welcome return for the pioneers of New Age/ Pop/ Dance and I can very easily say that this CD proves that Enigma has never lost their punch and in fact, I have to say that they've never sounded better. Must I say that the edition of "Voyageur" that I have comes in rather interesting packaging design. While the packaging isn't as well done as the entrancing transparent booklet design of their 1996 third album, it is far, far better than that awful digipak packaging. I am so happy to see Enigma evolve once again with this project. "Voyageur" truly lives up to it's title. It's a totally new chapter in Enigma's history and must be acquired by all Enigma fans. I am definitely looking forward to Enigma's sixth album whenever that comes out.

MCMXC a. D. - The Complete Album DVD

Enigma, aka Michael Crétu, turns out more light electronic ambience on Voyageur, mixing in an occasional twist but sticking pretty close to his successful, easily digested formula. Since Enigma?s massively popular debut MDMXC A.D., Crétu has moved toward a more New Age/adult contemporary sound, culminating with 2000?s bland The Screen Behind The Mirror. As with that record, Voyageur?s weakest moments happen when Crétu puts his mediocre vocals front and center on tracks like "Total Eclipse of the Moon." Better are more beat-oriented songs like "Boum-Boum" that concentrate on seedier, sexier material and stay away from Crétu?s sappier instincts. While overall, Voyageur counts as an improvement over Mirror, Enigma still hasn?t found a replacement for the Gregorian chants and whispery techno that made MDMXC A.D. such a groovy sensation. --Matthew Cooke
