Music Review: Excellent, but not quite what I was hoping for...

This CD is composed of very well-done songs, but for those looking for the epic background music of the Sharpe Series, it only has a few selections: the opening, the closing, "The Spanish Sword" from Sharpe's Rifles, the storming of Badajoz, and the music played when Harper and Sharpe are escaping from Sir Henry Simmerson in Sharpe's Regiment. There are adaptations of some of the songs Hagman (John Tams) sings. While he sounds as enjoyable as he did in the series, "Rogue's March" and "Gentleman Soldier" only feature one verse each. The fast-paced marches on the CD were exciting to listen to, but I didn't recognize any from the movies. As far as I can tell, themes and songs from the series itself make up less than half the total playing time. I would still like to see a Sharpe soundtrack with themes solely from the movies.
On the other hand, the songs featured which were not in the Sharpe's series come as a pleasant surprise, since John Tams and Kate Rusby have excellent voices. I had heard of many of these titles before, but had never listened to them. I'm glad I have now. I noticed some reviewers mentioned their favorite songs, but, personally, I couldn't pick a favorite. There is a wide range in the selection, from Rusby's wistful "Broken-hearted I Will Wander" and Tams's "Johnny Is Gone for a Soldier," to Tams's humorous "The Rambling Soldier," to the rousing "Over the Hills and Far Away." The purpose of this album is more to be a showcase of Napoleonic-era British songs, rather than a soundtrack for the Sharpe's series, and in that it succeeds brilliantly. I saw in some of the reviews that people didn't like the instruments playing behind the singers, but I don't mind the accompaniment. I think it adds rather than detracts or distracts. As an added bonus, the booklet included in the front cover includes the lyrics so you can follow along or learn the songs for yourself. I think this album merits 5 stars, even if it wasn't what I was hoping for.
If you can find this album for a reasonable price, it is definitely worth the buy. Just be aware that most of the music you heard in the Sharpe series will not be included.
