I am a professional bassoonist and I buy CDs to play along with. I had a gig playing principal for Hansel and Gretel and the Sadler's Wells orchestra sounds great. The singing is a little out of tune sometimes. The music, for a "children's opera" is quite Wagnerian/Straussian and for my taste, a little over the top for the simple libretto. (But, I can appreciate Humperdinck's orchestral writing.) The witch, Ann Howard, is great. Also, the lullaby is quite beautiful, probably my favorite aria of the opera. Wonderful music and a good recording.
