Music reviews of What Took You So Long? [UK CD]

Music Review: Second to None
Rating: 5 Stars

I've been through each of the Spice Girls' solo outings the moment they've been released, and while I was more or less satisfied with most of their attempts at a successful solo career, I always wondered what Emma would sound like on her own.

Emma Bunton has always been criticized by the general public for being the one with no talent in the group (though critics say that honor should go to Victoria), and when her take on the classic 'What I am' failed to make No.1 more than a year ago, people were writing her off. To be honest, her version of the song wasn't very good, and I thought that she had all but disappeared.

In the meantime, we suffered the onslaught of various Solo Spice Albums, each one more mixed than the other -

a) Geri Halliwell - 'Schizophonic'

b) Melanie C - 'Northern Star'

c) Melanie B - 'Hot'

d) Victoria Beckham - 'Out of your mind' (a single)

And now its Emma's turn, and what a lovely comeback it is. I first heard this on Emma's official website, and managed to catch the other songs on the CD-Single as well.

For those of you who're wondering what Emma now sounds like, well, rest assured that its not your usual bubblegum pop. Its tinged with a flavor of alternative music, and is mildly rockish in patches, but it manages to defy any genre of music, which is a feat I never expected Emma to pull off.

Emma's voice, seemingly mouse-ish on 'What I am' has been transformed into a Joni Mitchell-like singalong instrument. She also, VERY surprisingly, evokes images and sounds of Dusty Springfield and Joan Baez. Now THATS a compliment.

I must say that I am in awe of this new sound. None of the Spice Girls never really got my respect as artists when they were together as a group, and on their own, none of them struck me as really very talented. It all seemed very put-together and artificial. But this new work from Emma confirms that there is at least some good that has arisen from the Spice Girls, and that she has turned out to be the most creative and talented of the lot. Who would've thought.

Emma's 'What took you so long?' reminded me of Emmylou Harris as well. This is a song that could do well on country charts as well, and even on the modern rock charts, if promoted properly. If you are all skeptical of Emma Bunton, just give this a listen. Hers is a powerful new voice in a pop-world filled with wannabe harlets. The fact that it went to No. 1 in the UK the first week of release is proof enough that Emma has broken the code, and has managed to get people to listen to real music once again.

The most welcome surprise of the year!
