Music Review: Great mixes, great material, marginal results

A really exaspertaing Elvis record for this ol' Elvis fan: as i wrote in the Review title, we get a great mix (good instrumental presence and the voices do not compete with the lead singer), great material, in fact, one his very best albums, in that regard - includes material associated with Roscoe Gordon and The Drifters; songs written by Leiber and Stoller.
It's easy to say that this effort is not to be considered pivotal or even representative, as the man is obviously in pain over changes in his personal life -and possibly by NON-changes in his career. (Although he had recently won another Grammy for a Gospel album and delivered a Number One album, taken from a hugely successful TV Special from Hawaii). As has been said elsewhere, in a way, the touring and general business-as-usual had taken place of the formula flicks of the '60s. And even the most ardent fan of the Big El can hear him struggling through songs, which a few years earlier, he would have tore up piece by piece.
In short, fans..Elvis is simply not into-it.
The title song is an unspired little ditty about being brought up on rock and roll radio - and listening to Elvis Presley? I don't know...am i missing something? Funny that this pop-minded muse gets the strongest vocal!
The B-side selection from, this set is a song called "For ol' Times Sake" (not to be confused with Elvis' 1962 waltz-time album cut called "Just For old Times Sake"..I would have dug a cool remake, but...). A slow, introspective ballad b the great song witer Tony Joe White, but suffice to say, there's nothing here to set 'em on fire, like his "Polk Salad Annie", which Presley always devoured in concert. To add to the weariness of the thing, the melody cannot stand alone in the aural space occupied by Gilbert O'Sullivan and his Top Ten hit, "Alone Again, Naturally". Needless to say, Elvis just might have made *that* song his own, at the time.
Best tracks: the first four: Raised On Rock, Are You Sincere, Find Out What's Happening, I Miss You; plus track #6: For Ol' Times Sake.
(Note: this Reviewer feels that as directionless and tired as much of EP's studioo work was, say 1972 to 1976, his stage shows were most often spectacular! There are numerous "mixing board" albums from that period (and, of course, youtube clips, which attest to that!).
