Music Review: if you could only pick one Elvis album, this one would have to be it

Elvis' Golden Records sold like hotcakes when it was first released on vinyl LP back in the day; and I can see it's still selling now in CD and MP3 formats! Elvis was clearly one of the best male vocalists the world has ever seen; and songs like this showcase his incredible talent very nicely. We get quite a few great songs by Elvis which makes this CD truly valuable. The quality of the sound is excellent and I like that they used the same artwork that they had for the record album release of this album.
The CD starts with Elvis belting out "Hound Dog" with so much energy that it's positively electric! The guitar and percussion work wonders for this rock song; and only Elvis could deliver this number as good as he does here. "Loving You" shifts gears for a much slower, sweeter ballad that's still every bit as passionate as "Hound Dog;" and Elvis' excellent diction enhances his performance all the more. Impressive! "All Shook Up" has a great early rock and roll flavor to it as Elvis delivers this faultlessly; and I really like both "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Jailhouse Rock."
"Too Much" has such a great beat that this is infectiously catchy; if you don't find yourself tapping your foot to the beat you had better check your pulse! Elvis delivers this like the great rockin' balladeer he always was and still remains. "Too Much" features Elvis in his natural element; and the backup vocalists harmonize very well. In addition, "Don't Be Cruel" is a whopper of a tune that Elvis bats straight out of the ballpark; he never falters and this got all the attention it deserved when it was originally released. "Don't Be Cruel" is still one of Elvis' best records.
"(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" is absolutely wonderful; and there's a true gem when Elvis performs "Love Me Tender." Love Me Tender" lacks nothing--it's all THAT good. "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" has a melody that I could never forget; this is clearly one of Elvis' best and the music that goes along with Elvis' vocals perfectly complements his singing. On an album where just about every track is a major highlight, "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" is a highlight among highlights! Listen also for Elvis to do a terrific job performing "My Baby Left Me;" this tune benefits from some mighty fine guitar playing and it all holds its own very well.
"That's All Right" has a country flavor to it that works wonders for this ballad; and Elvis never skips a beat. "That's All Right" is very strong and I like it very much. "Baby, Let's Play House" has more outstanding guitar work as Elvis sing this flawlessly; "Baby, Let's Play House" is a strong tune. The CD ends well, too, with Elvis Presley performing "Blue Suede Shoes." "Blue Suede Shoes" is unforgettable; this is Elvis Presley at his finest and just one listen proves it.
Elvis Presley may have left us all too soon; but obviously he lives on through his music. I highly recommend this for the Elvis fan who has to have everything; and people just discovering the magical artistry of Elvis Presley would do well to start with this CD.

Small light scuff on disc will not affect play.There are several books that supposedly introduce the uninitiated to the King--including Elvis for Beginners and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Elvis--and this 1958 compilation (his first) is an aural equivalent, spotlighting the initial post-Sun '56 and '57 hit singles that originally transformed the King into...well, the King! If you're not yet ready to invest in the King of Rock 'n' Roll box set, this makes for an excellent alternative. After all, it's awfully hard to go wrong with tracks like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," and "Jailhouse Rock"--although they're now so overly familiar to most of us that they might as well be the national anthem. Nevertheless, rock & roll as we know it--and the very concept of "rock star"--essentially began here. --Bill Holdship
