Music reviews of Elvis 56

Music Review: It has it's moments...
Rating: 2 Stars

... but it's honestly overrated, mainly just in comparison to his Sun Records recordings.

I'll admit that this is just my opinion, and sometimes I enjoy this when I'm in the mood. However, when I listen to this album, I always think, Elvis at Sun is a much better album.

After writing this review, I had a few discussions with some of my friends from school (I'm a student at McNally Smith College of Music, where we're encouraged to open up musically and listen to everything), I realized that I actually think more positively about Elvis then most people I go to school with, and we're all musicians that are very open to different genres and artists, so we always listen to music with an open mind. I'm not even exaggerating, I actually am a lot more optimistic about Elvis than most people there.

I'll also admit that I'm giving this album less stars than I would if there were other low ratings. I feel that it was when Elvis got signed to RCA where his sound was changed for the worse. I think that with Elvis at Sun, it wasn't just Elvis, but it was more of a band. Scotty Moore is one of the most underrated guitarists, and he deserves just as much recognition as Elvis, and so does Sam Phillips.

Sam Phillips was looking for a white person to do what Elvis did. Elvis had a very distinctive voice that was very popular, and just about everyone imitated that voice. Scotty Moore's guitar playing style was what really created rockabilly. Scotty Moore definitely had a strong influence on George Harrison's guitar playing. Bill Black's bass playing was some of the earliest slap bass playing ever done. With this album, I like the addition of D.J. Fontana, but it's probably just that he's the one that everyone talks about.

I think that this album is a bit too producer driven in all of the wrong ways, which, in my personal opinion, doesn't work for Elvis. If this is what represents Elvis, why is he called the King of Rock and Roll? Backup vocals, carefully orchestrated arrangements, and professional pop song writers take away Elvis Presley's edge. Stick with Elvis at Sun.

Also, about Elvis being considered the King of Rock and Roll. If you ask most rock musicians who their influences are, most of them will not put Elvis at the top of their list, but while Elvis focuses much more on being cool, artists such as John Lennon, Jimmy Page, Kurt Cobain, and Jimi Hendrix focus much more on lyrics and melody, and they were also much more edgy, even for the time. Second and finally, I thought rock music was supposed to be rebellion against authority, so if you have a king, that's not rock.

P.S. I'll admit that I sometimes do enjoy listening to this album, but I feel that in comparison to other stuff, I have to give this album the review I gave it. I'm sorry Elvis fans.

Description of Elvis 56

The organizing principle of Elvis 56 is simple: 1956 is the year Presley recorded these 22 tracks (including an alternate take of "Heartbreak Hotel," the opening track, recorded January 10). It's also the year that Presley became the biggest pop phenomenon since Frank Sinatra after kicking up a fuss on Milton Berle's and Steve Allen's TV variety shows. In the studio, Presley's first recordings for RCA drew from the same pool of rhythm & blues tunes that he'd been interpreting at Sun Records. 1956 was the year Presley sang great songs by Otis Blackwell ("Don't Be Cruel," "Paralyzed," "Ready Teddy") and the Leiber-Stoller team ("Hound Dog," "Love Me"). He also essentially swiped Carl Perkins's "Blue Suede Shoes" and tried to do the same with such other contemporary hits as "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" and "Shake, Rattle, and Roll." Note that on the same day he recorded the galvanizing "Heartbreak Hotel," Presley also cut a most Sun-like (and wholly appropriate) "Money Honey." The compilation chronicles a remarkable year in which every song rang true; the booklet includes exquisite period photos of Presley taken by Alfred Wertheimer. A video of the same title that chronicles the year in pictures is highly recommended. --John Milward
