Music reviews of Elv1s 30 #1 Hits

Music Review: Rock'n'Roll came from Blues not Elvis, he just got into it
Rating: 1 Stars

Elvis is somewhat appealing if one doesn't know the roots and origins of Rock 'n' Roll to begin with. Thomas Everstein, you have a lot to learn about Rock 'n' Roll. You say you can't dance, well then you can't rock nor do you seem to be able to roll. You seem to have a problem with Rap yet, as an entity, rap by your own confession has crossed genres bringing different demographics of listeners together in one accord. Sure, Rap is injured and has been for the last 11 years yet even so Rock music as well went through a phase of embodying rampant themes of promiscuous sex, gratuitous drug use and violence as well. Mind you even Elvis was an abuser of prescription drugs that distorted the quality of his music even stupefying some of his most die-hard fans. Point being Rock music was also plagued with the ills that can affect any form of music and only until Grunge and bands like Nirvana was there any human honesty allowed into the genre to begin the healing process of examining the pain that eluded so many artists in their pursuit of mind-numbing substances to cloud their judgement and consequently the judgements of their fans and casual listeners. When Rap becomes honest with its listeners, then it among other music forms like Country Music will be a healing form of music as all music is supposed to be. Music is supposed to absorb and draw out all the negative, pent up energies that are supposedly misunderstood by all except the artists and the listeners. Different forms of music are all supposed to provide this quality to various demographics of listeners from various cultures and backgrounds. It makes no sense to dismiss a whole genre of music if one can't placate the genre's listeners in place of the music.

Honesty is what Elvis lacked in that he paid no tribute to the originators who kept Rock 'n' Roll going before it became mainstream and hit the airwaves. When it became mainstream it was seen as a rebellious music that had young teeny-boppers in the air dancing profusely to the point where the teen girls constantly had their skirt-tails in the air showing their skimpies and tighty-whities. Fact of the matter is that Rock 'n' Roll started as much like rap did. It was a rebellious type of music that was dually a voice for the then younger generation, because of the norms of the time the youth were to be seen not heard and so had no voice.

Equally without a voice were the minority, African-American blue-collar laborers. These working, lower-class impoverished African-American men, women, and children worked so vigilantly from the week's beginning to the week's end that they were too tired to indulge in any leisure beyond literally rocking to a rhythm in a rocking chair and rolling those weekend rhythms over into the coming weeks' work which they enhanced with Rock 'n' Roll that started out as a tune, a mere hummed tune that was effectively the then version of no-doze. Those tunes were so spiritually inclined that their fatigued bodies rocking and reeling about on tired rubbery legs could just barely complete their tasks. When tired individuals work expeditiously still, they are said to be rolling or on a roll, hence the inception of Rockin' and Rollin' later to become the markettable music Rock 'n' Roll. All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy and so came the Chuck Berry classic "go, go Johnny go, go, go Johnny go, go, go Johnny go, go, go". So Chuck Berry is the inspiration behind the girl's Rock group The Go-Gos. Not to mention the other founding contributors such as Fats Dominoe with the classic "Blueberry Hill" where he found his thrill and the awesome to this day Muddy Waters's "Green Onions" guitar and organ theme. Little Richard was knockin' em out with "Good Golly Ms. Molly" and "Long Tall Sally", whaaaaaat!!!!!!!, tsssssssk, and Thomas Everstein says that Elvis founded what? Where do you think Elvis got his soulful pelvis grinding from, moving his hips and all, that came from the smoky grooves of the bluesmen's jawnts back when the club was just a shack, yo go peep the Ralph Macchio and Joe Seneca movie "CrossRoads" with Jamie "Jersey Girl" Gertz, that movie is awesome. Also peep the movie "The Five Heartbeats", those movies will give you some genuine history of the origins of Rock 'n' Roll.

Rock 'n' Roll is the progenitor of Rap, Rock, Grunge, Heavy Metal, Gothic, and Death Metal just as Blues gave rise to Rock 'n' Roll and R&B (Rhythm and Blues). The one star is because just as Mick Jagger and Tina Turner give proper mention to their genres previous greats so should Elvis until then, he has no standing if he does not mention those who created the platform upon which he was even heard, even Eminem mentioned the phenomenon whereby he might be perceived as an Elvis, who capitalized off of the music of African-Americans, calling himself the King and then posing as the founder of the music without thanking them for allowing him to learn the fundamentals of their grass-roots artform. Elvis is the King of Rock 'n' Roll mainstream radio cross-over. When you dis Rap you dis yourself. Its a wrap.

Description of Elv1s 30 #1 Hits

Slide-pack edition of this release, a no-frills CD packaging featuring an outer slipcase with the original cover artwork and an inner 'slider' including a CD. There is no CD booklet in this package. For those wanting to delve into the magic that is Elvis should start here. 30 of his #1 singles including 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Don't Be Cruel', 'Suspicious Minds', 'Love Me Tender' and more, plus the remix of 'A Little Less Conversation' by Junkie XL.. Sony/BMG. 2007.
In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship
