Music Reviews of Aida (2000 Original Broadway Cast)

Music Review: Aida is simply enchanting
Rating: 5 Stars

I heard Elton's version of "written in the star" and got curious so i checked it out and found out it was made for a broadway musical called Aida. After reading the story and seeing clips of it in youtube, i fell in love with it. I bought the audio with the original cast and the book too and eversince, i am hooked. I can't seem to stop playing it over and over again. Tim Rice's lyrics maybe simple yet it relayed the story very well and Elton's music is simply delightful. Adam Pascal(as Radames), Heather Headley(as Aida), and Sherie Rene Scott's(as Amneris) voices blends so well, listening to them is pure magic! they provided so much soul and emotion in every song they sang, its really amazing. If you can get the whole Aida libretto, i suggest that you read it while listening to this audio. Its so moving that it brought tears to my eyes listening to the last 5 songs. It's so unfortunate, i missed the broadway show but the book and the audio simply made up for it. This cd might not work for everyone but if you're quite a romance sucker, this is for you.
I heard disney's is planning on making it to film. I hope, they will hire the same artists who made this album because the voices are simply enchanting.

Music Review: True Character and Heart
Rating: 5 Stars

When Sherrie Rene Scott begins that timeless Every Story Is A Love Story, you are drawn into a world of love, betrayal, and unforgettable performances. Tim Rice and Elton John have produced a timely piece of Broadway history with Aida. The music found here is jolting and memorable and is orchestrated wonderfully.

Adam Paschal (I'm a Rent head!) and Heather Headley are our star-crossed lovers, and their voices are some of the most powerful and thought provoking to have ever struck my ears. Adam Paschal proves his power in Fortune Favors the Brave, and as his character softens, the tone in his singing softens and goes with the story. The man has a talent, and uses it gracefully. Heather Headley has a beautiful voice and has many moments to use her voice. I have to mention her in Dance of the Robe, she's wonderful. Sherie Rene Scott is a wonder also. Her voice is powerful and fun (My Strongest Suit) and at other times, pierces your heart (I Know the Truth).

I'm a fan of theatre and Broadway music stylings. I love it when true character and heart is put into song. True character and heart is exactly what you'll find in Tim Rice and Elton John's Aida.

Music Review: A performer's playground
Rating: 3 Stars

This score is a lesson in mediocraty. The lyrics are uneven and unrepresentative of Rice's usually good work. The score, mainly Gospel and Pop-Rock, fails to take advantage of the musical moments the story lends. There are two cultures in this show, the Egyptians and the Nubians. The music should have reflected the differences of the two cultures, and what happens when the cultures meet via the two young lovers. The score makes no such attempts. Each song in the score sounds like a totally seperate track, not part pf a larger work. (This is not a good thing). The songs are generally enjoyable, if formulaic. Fortuantly, most of the songs allow the immensly talanted cast to shine. Headly shows off her wonderful voice in every song she sings. "My Strongest Suit," one of my personal favorites from the show, lets Scott release the diva inside. Pacale sings his songs well, though he is most effective in "Fortune Favors the Brave," possibly because that song is very RENT-esque. These three performers are talented enough to carry the album and make it enjoyable. Buy it for them, not for the score.

Music Review: Elton John and Tim Rice nail it again!
Rating: 5 Stars

Pure gold again by Tim Rice and Elton John! I saw it on Broadway and this is by far one of the best musicals on Broadway. Finally, a musical which may challenge The Producers at this year's Tony Awards. Heather Headley is classic in the role of Aida (The Past is Another Land) and her counterpart Adam Pascal is one of the greatest rock singers of this age and nails the role of Radames (Fortune Favors the Brave). The performance is better than any I've ever seen. The lighting and costumes, absolutely amazing! So, I bought the CD which is a must buy. Sherie Rene Scott has an amazing voice and is perfect in the part of Amneris(My Strongest Suit). Then we have the evil of the story, Radames' father Zoser(Another Pyramid) played by John Hickok who is outstanding and the lost lover Mareb(How I Know You) played by Damian Perkins who is yet again perfect for the role. All-around this is one of the best musicals out there now and rivals the greats of all-time (Cats, Les Miserables, etc.) Expect this one to be on Broadway for a while and go see it! Oh, and to hold you over until then buy this CD!

Music Review: An AMAZING Musical, and a Fabulous CD
Rating: 5 Stars

I am a musical theater college student in Chicago, and Aida was the first show I ever saw on Broadway in New York. This musical literally changed my life. I can honestly say that if I never saw Aida I probably never would have followed my dreams to become a performer on Broadway. Since then I have seen the show about 4 more times, and loved it more and more since then. Every cast member I have met including Adam and Heather have been so friendly and so encouraging and have made the Palace Theater a stop I have to make everytime I go to New York City. For those who don't enjoy the CD just listen to "Another Pyramid" or "Strongest Suit". Both are amazing, up-tempo, in your face tunes that make you want to stand and clap. After that listen to "Elaborate Lives" or "Written in the Stars". Both are beautiful ballads which brings tears to your eyes. Basically if you mix an amazing cast with an amazing set with some great dance and the music of Elton John and Tim Rice you get Aida. It's a show no one should miss, and every theater fan should have this CD. Thanks!
