Music Review: The last round up, better on this expanded edition.

ELO's "Balance Of Power", #49, is really the last ELO album. This came out during the spring of '86, when hair metal and synth pop was taking over the airwaves. Jeff Lynne was just getting tired of doing this and it shows in someways. He wanted to produce other artists and he would later form the Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison in 1988. Here ELO was down to 3 members, Richard Tandy, Bev Bevan and Jeff. This version of "Balance", is so much better than the original album, the sound is so pristine and the bonus tracks add depth to the procedings. The album opens with one of my favorites from the album "Heaven Only Knows", just a fine pop-rocker, I think it deserved to be a single from the get go. "So Serious", was the 2nd single from the album, a nice little piece that should of hit the 40, it was that good. The first sign I knew ELO was in trouble was with those lyrics on "Getting To The Point", released as a single during the strike of Epic's distribution company, only released to a few shops, a collector's item if you have one, fine sax by Christian Schneider. The syth driven "Secret Lives", with some fine guitar by Jeff. "Is It Alright", this is a very good song, it has a strong beat and is a sturdy pop-rocker. Another song with cryptic lyrics about a break-up is "Sorrow About To Fall", with Christian on sax again. Bev puts in some good drumming here. "Without Someone", is a very meloncholy tune, with dreamy keyboards by Richard, only Jeff could keep me interested with this type of song. The 1st single released from the set was "Calling America", #18, their last charting single, I like the song, but they had better choices here. "Endless Lies", Jeff calling in for some Roy Orbison here, very 50's sounding with some great effects. They finish the album with the pulsive beat of "Send It", a fun little number.
The Bonus Tracks,
"Opening/"Heaven Only Knows"(Alternate version), Is the price of admission for this new CD. It goes in several different directions than the original version on the album.
"In For The Kill", A real great beat piece, solid keyboards by Richard.
"Secret Lives" (Alternate Take), more of a steady rock number then the synth piece on the album.
"Sorrow About To Fall" (Alternate Mix), Very different mix, not as polished as the album version.
"Caught In A Trap", Loved this song in the 80's, glad to finally have it back and on CD, great song, very techno, Richard plays some fine keyboards here.
"Destination Unknown", Fine horn piece, catchy as hell, Jeff could do so much and nobody has given him much credit and that's a shame.
15 years later ELO re-formed without Bevan and Tandy (except for 1 song "Alright", with Richard). I find the album "Zoom", #94 to be more of a solo record by Jeff, than a band project.
