Music Review: Better than the movie.

I had real issues with the "Heavy Metal" animated feature. I still do. Glamorizing drug use, glorifying violence, and showing just a lot of social dirt in an animated venue just always struck me as being the epitome of poor taste. I still think that.
Now, having said all that, the music, that is the score by Elmer Bernstein really surpasses expectation. I have to say I like the more traditional themes as opposed to the more science-fiction oriented compositions underscored by that strange wind instrument that is so often associated with cheesy B-movie sci-fi from the 1950s.
The music help salvages what is essentially the quintessential counter culture film. It's a relatively high budget extravaganza of cartoon violence, glorifying some of the worst in human behavior. But, bringing those visuals from the brink of dismissive trashing are the redemptions of the stories themselves and music.
Bernstein's score helps guide your gut instinct along the path. We already know that it's a shock and horror to see a little girl's father disintegrate before her eyes, but the music subtracts any ambiguity for the most hardened of hearts, and let's us know that the "locnar" is a dangerous visitor. The music also tells us how the "Big Apple" has fallen on hard times, or how Den is cleaning up a planet in turmoil and saving the girl of his dreams (that music is some of my favorite). The score time and again comes in to remind us of the emotional shock and weight of the visuals. Whether Den is beating aliens or Tarna is dressing herself in a very skimpy harness and sword. It's there to help our emotional roller coaster, because with a film like this you could probably get worn out by all of the anti social behavior witnessed on screen.
In the end it's just music, albeit narrative music. It is an album that I originally dismissed out hand when it was first stocked in the record stores. But I later came to appreciate it through the film (which I did not like all that much). And after many years of searching for it, it is finally rereleased on CD for all to enjoy.
As for the movie itself? Well, I don't have too much to say about it other than I can appreciate the adventurous spirit of the effort, but it is after all, just a movie aimed at a certain audience that I did not associate with when it first hit the theatres. With a few more years under my belt I can look at it without being threatened by its content, and actually appreciate elements of the artistry (like the score), but I still dismiss the film itself.
