Music Reviews of Elliott YaminMusic Review: Yamin Delivers, As Expected Rating: 4 Stars
As expected, Elliott Yamin's debut CD is wonderfully Elliott. From the night he sang "Moody's Mood for Love" on American Idol, it was evident that whatever he produced would be top-notch. The first cut, "Movin' On," has a nice body-rocking beat that showcases the ease with which he sings. And "Alright" makes you want to at least clap along if you can't dance. For the most part, all cuts are heartfelt ahd showcase a range of emotions, however, some of the tunes are a little draggy and seem a bit forced (as in, "Let's hurry and lay down something so we can get the CD out of the door"), and would probably have been better served on a follow-up CD. The Donny Hathaway influence is apparent in Yamin's music, and the CD's final cut ("A Song for You") is a tribute to that talented singer who left this world too soon. And, of course, Yamin does the tune more than justice. You won't be disappointed with Yamin's debut CD. It's a great start and, hopefully, only the first of many block-busters to come.
Music Review: I Don't Know What To Say Rating: 3 Stars
I was actually nervous about Elliot's upcoming CD. He has such a rich, manly, soulful voice and I was afraid that this CD would be pop with watered down R&B mixed into it. When I heard the first track, "Movin On," I sighed with relief and just knew this CD was going to be off the chain with a straight up soul and R&B vibe. But after that song, everything went down hill until the song ended with "A Song For You." The first and the last songs were fine, but everything else is what I feard it be: pop with lukewarm soul. What happend to the soul and R&B, Elliot? I've heard clips of Elliot's other performances outside of AI, and his voice sent my mind soaring. I didn't get that same feeling at all from this CD, except from "Movin On" and a "Song For You." With a voice as good as his, I don't know any effort wasn't put in to create some classic, stand out tracks. I'm not saying this is bad, but it could've been much better. For Elliot's next CD, I hope he'll throw it down and do some Neo-Soul.
Music Review: Strong Debut Rating: 4 Stars
Support your boy.
This CD won't exactly knock off your socks. Without the AMERICAN IDOL slant, I'd probably think this was pretty average pop R&B. Even for a White guy, if that sort of thing's important to you. Then I realized his voice has not been altered one bit. No digitization, no running through computer enhancement.
I'm hearing him. Elliott Yamin.
While there aren't necessarily any immediate standouts, there isn't a bad song in the bunch either.
The song themes are what you'd expect: uplifting, loving, groovy.
But you haven't come for the songs. You've come for him. You want to see if he can pass muster.
He can.
He's better than he was on the show.
Soulful.
Like fluttering cherry blossoms.
Like cool lemonade on a hot day.
Like lilting, soft laughter.
You won't regret this album. You'll look forward to more.
Music Review: Worth the Wait Rating: 5 Stars
Well, we've had to wait quite a while for Elliott's CD but I have to say he has done a fine job. His voice sounds great and several of the songs deserve to be hits. My personal favorites are You Are the One, Trainwreck, I'm the Man, Wait for You, Take My Breath Away, and A Song for You. I heard the whole CD on AOL music and I received my Amazon order today, right on schedule.
Someone else posted that they thought all the songs sounded the same. I don't agree. Elliott sings his heart out on each track and makes each song his own.
I do think the lyrics are sometimes too simple but that does not take away from the quality of the album.
And the album gets even better after the first listen.
Now I just hope those who didn't watch American Idol will buy the CD, too. They are in for a huge treat.
BTW, there are bonus tracks at other places to buy the album and Elliott does a fantastic version of Whiter Shade of Pale.
Music Review: Incredible voice, but songs lacking Rating: 2 Stars
My mind was made up, the moment I fell in love with Elliot on the show, that no matter how bad this album was going to be, I was going to own it. The reason was simple: A voice like that cannot be allowed to disappear into obscurity, as have been the fate of many idols.
That being said, Elliot's voice is gorgeous and restrained, making mediocre songs sound halfway interesting. The lack of imaginative, diverse, and real instrument (would love to have heard some serious horn section) is one reason why this album sounds thin and abrupt. The other just boils down to unoriginal songwriting. Some songs have the potential to be winners, but the production side was repetitive, making some of the few-note melodies even more monotonous.
Granted, Elliot doesn't have the clout yet to choose giants of the industry to work with, but let's give him some time. So fans, buy the cd, nurture this incredible talent so he gets to pick better producers next time.
