Music Reviews of XoMusic Review: beautiful and honest. genius Rating: 5 Stars
I have never written a review online before but I have become so obsessed with this album that I feel complused to share it with everyone. This urge has recently grown to not only include my friends and aquaintences, but people I have never and will never meet. I want to run up to strangers on the street and tell them about it. Every song on the album is beautiful, and some if you are a sensitive type, will probobly make you cry. I'm not a sensitive type and some of these songs make me cry. It's that good. Honest, personal, simple and complex at the same time, beautifully composed, arranged, and sung. This is definitly my favorite album by Elliott Smith, though I really love figure 8 too. Basically you'll have to listen to it yourself, though like most good music, it takes a few times playing it before you'll really get into it.
Music Review: Elliot Smith at his absolute best Rating: 5 Stars
Elliot Smith was one of the few artists who didn't need his sound to be polished for his songs to sound so amazing and moving. XO was probably his most polished album and the songs still retained all their raw power and the simple beauty contained in his other rougher produced works. I could listen to Bottle Up and Explode and Everybody Cares over and over and over again and never get tired of listening. This is one of the few artists who made such an art form out of melancholy. His point of view is unique and his approach is so singular. Every song is loaded with angst and pure emotion, so arresting and dynamic they manage to never lose their power with time. Definitely someone who left us way too soon but left behind and incredible wealth of music. This album is at the top of his achievements for me. Buy it, Buy it...BUY IT!
Music Review: Perfect to initiate you into the music of Elliott Smith Rating: 5 Stars
If you're looking to buy your first Elliot Smith album, XO is where I would start. I would recommend it to anyone that appreciates beautiful music. Elliott Smith is my very favorite artist. His lyrics and delivery of those lyrics are so amazing, pretty much all of his music makes me want to cry (and that was even before his tragic death). I love this album because I like the bigger production and lusher melodies of XO. I do love his bare bones first 2 albums and either/or has a lot of my favorite Elliott Smith songs, but when recommending an Elliott Smith album to someone who has never heard his music, I recommend XO because it is the most listener-friendly and still displays his delicate and moving musicianship. You can't go wrong with Elliott Smith though, and if you like any of his cds, I imagine you would like them all.
Music Review: Good, but... Rating: 4 Stars
I really liked this CD, as I have liked his other CDs. However, I think that Either/Or is better. As a lot of other people said, this album is a lot more "produced." This isn't neccessarily a problem, but sometimes that gets in the way of songwriting, and Smith's previous quiet, gentle sound. The best songs on this CD are definitley "Waltz #2," "Pitseleh," and "Sweet Adeline," though they're mostly all good. Honestly, the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the song "Amity." I always skip over it. I mean, you know a song's in trouble when it's called "Amity," and the first line of the song is "Amity Amity Amity Amity Amity Amity Amity..." Other than that, though, its a really good CD, so buy it, but skip over #9.
Music Review: If you don't have this CD then you're missing out!!!!! Rating: 5 Stars
I have been listening to Elliott Smith for years now and his music still remains fresh and somehow thought-provoking. If you're looking for music that is cheap, simple, and cliche' then don't listen to Elliott. Although I am greatly saddened by his recent death, his music allows his spirit to live on - a spirit that really pores forth from his music.
As far as what his music sounds like? A lot of people compare him to Nick Drake which is fairly accurate because a lot of his songs have a rather chilling, haunting melody. But I would also compare him to the likes of George Harrison, Donovan, Quasi, Ben Kweller, etc. So if you like any of those artists then you would probably like Elliott and vice-versa. Buy Elliott's CD's (all of them - they're all equally good) - you won't be disappointed.
