Music Review: Ella at Mister Kelly's

I was fortunate enough to hear Ella during her historic three-week engagement at Chicago's Mister Kelly's. This recording is Ella at her very best. It's inexplicable why this material was buried for a half century in Verve's vaults. Ella was on the brink of a glittering career in big indoor and outdoor venues. Here she performs in an intimate night club setting to an audience so enraptured by her singing that you could hear a pin drop. Ella comments about this being one of the most attentive audience she had ever played to. It was her last night at Mr. Kelly's (where other great jazz singers including Sarah Vaughan and Anita O'Day recirded albums.) Part of the fun is hearing Ella being introduced and her rapport with the audience. Her program is vintage Ella, the uptempo scat stuff mixed with georgous ballads. Some of these selections were, as far as I know, never recorded elsewhere. I adored Ella and I adore this album. It is a tremedous find.
