Music Review: A Family Affair?

Elizabeth Mitchell's cds have been a staple around our house since we first heard You Are My Little Bird a few years ago. Kid's music that is smart and savvy enough for grownups to love (A Velvet Underground cover? Yes, please!), Mitchell's albums are one of the few things that our whole family can agree on musically.
So, how's the new one? Well, there are a few standouts, but all in all, we've been feeling a bit underwhelmed by it so far. Most tracks tend to melt together, or even annoy at times (the Chuck Berry cover springs most immediately to mind). Mitchell and husband Dan Ireton continue to be the backbone of the band, but the increased presence of daughter Storey on so many songs seems unnecessary and a little distracting. An excellent song like Little Buckaroo (w/Jon Langford)is marred by her awkward harmonica solo, and did we really need to hear her sing solo verses on quite so many songs?
There is an personal intimacy to this album that is at times charming, and at others a bit cloying. I can appreciate the impulse to integrate one's children into the music-making process, and applaud it in theory, but have to say that we're not caring for the execution as much as we'd hoped.
