This CD contains 13 Jewish religious songs that are sung by members of the Bene Israel community of Bombay, now called Mumbai.One of the singers whose voice I recognize, as I listen to the different songs in this CD, is that of Mr. Benjamin Simon Dandekar. Mr. Dandekar,who had a beautiful voice has since passed away.
This CD package contains a small but well written booklet. Dr Shalwa Weil who did a thesis on the community for the University of Sussex in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosphy in the Division of Social Anthropology has written on the history and culture of the Bene Israel. Dr Sara Manesseh who is a musicologist has analyzed and written on the music and religious songs of the Bene Israel. The songs and the music in the CD together with the literary contributions to understanding the Bene Israel and their music makes this CD and booklet a collector's item.
