Music Review: Real Music for New Age fans ready to expand their horizons

The details on the Amazon.com site are slightly misleading. John Ireland (a 20th century British composer) does not feature - the name should have been John Dowland and this will give a far better idea of the contents. Deborah Friou (authoress of a couple of books on early harp music) plays a selection of 23 melodies mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. Some are by named composers others anonymous. Many are transcriptions of lute pieces. All are beautifully played with a charming but not too intrusive reverberation. I have many 'authentic' performances from this repetoire in my collection but this is a delightful introduction to those who are usnure whether they will take to 'old' music (which too often features the sour sound of the original instrument brigade). When played with such passion and fervour rare delights such as the tracks on this cd must win over even the sternest critic. For those who wish to explore further try the Skeapings (City Waits) - they offer early music on early instruments without any 'sour' intonation.Meanwhile thank you Deborah but why don't you record more?
