Music Review: Elf: A Forgotten Band!

This self-titled LP from 1972 is the debut of Ronald Padavona's (Dio - who also plays bass here) band that also featured two other future Rainbow members in Mickey Lee Soule on piano/keyboards and Gary Driscoll on drums with Dave Feinstein completing the quartet on guitar. The album is notable also for being produced by Roger Glover/Ian Paice from Deep Purple.
The eight songs that make up the recording were written by the Soule/Padavona team and seven out of the eight feature the band's trademark style of bluesy/boogie-woogie/honky-tonk/southern rock with a combination of mean lead guitar and piano over Driscoll's R&B style of drumming. My favorites in that vein are the first one "Hoochie Koochie Lady", "Dixie Lee Junction", and "Sit Down Honey (Everything Will Be Alright)". A notable song is track number four "I'm Coming Back For You" which sounds more like hard rock. However there's one exception in track number three "Nevermore": a progressive type of composition that starts quietly with a haunting/gloomy ballad-like intro with the pace slowly picking up until it concludes with a more rocking section but still maintaining a haunting/gloomy type of mood. Definitely one of the album's best!
In a nutshell, if you are a fan of blues/southern rock from the 70's then you should check these guys out!
