Music Review: Very decent. But not exceptional

An extremely decent, interesting, but not well-balanced album. Highly professional, aggressive catchy tracks (but standards still) mixed up with 2 surprising outstanding ballads - very much in the same mood (and on the same level) as Deep Purple (in the days of "Stormbringer").
Unusually good singing of Dio.
As for some reviews mentioning that Mercury and Plant were not worth holding the coat tails of Dio - c'mon, it's either exageration or - put it mildly - ignorance. On "Elf" Dio is in an excellent shape, but he remains a singer of 2nd league - for starters he was too short of breath to compete with Plant or Gillan. Secondly, his voice lacks the power and richness of his peers.
"Elf" and "Rainbow" are perhaps his best works, he shouldn't have stepped in the shoes of Osbourne - they turned out to be far too heavy.
Perhaps Dio should have stayed with this band. Or his own - instead of forever standing in the shadow of the giants.
But this particular album is worth every penny.
