Music Review: Experimental Hip Hop, Band Style?

I'm a huge hip hop fan, I'm into a lot of DJ stuff. I bought Eddie Def's "Wax Peoples" and found out how incredible he is, so when I picked up El Stew and saw his name in small print on the back, I knew it had to be tight. I was not disappointed, but I was surprised. This does not sound like a dj album. Rather, it is like a band, with the dj as the lead singer, I guess. It's mind-blowing, weird, crazy, and unfathomably good. My man who reviewed this first is right on... the beats are as dope as any I've ever heard. Their samples are loony as hell. If you're at all familiar with the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, then surely you've heard about the Shiggar Fraggar. Well, on this album he actually plays! I have a few Shiggar Fraggar Show albums, but it's always dedicated to him and not by him. I couldn't tell you what part of the tracks he's on, but he's there. Anyway, pick this up if you've got an open musical mind and want to hear something you've never heard before. It has quickly become one of my favorites. If anybody could tell me what the hell a 'vocoder' is, I'd appreciate it...

1999 debut by avante supergroup featuring Buckethead, Eddie Def, Brain, DJ Disk and DJ Extraked. 18 tracks.El Stew are a motley assortment: there's Brain, the drummer from Primus; DJ Disk, a.k.a. the Shigger Fragger, the godfather of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz; twisted guitarist Buckethead--who wears a chicken bucket atop his noggin whenever he appears onstage; Eddie Def of the Space Travelers (formerly the Scratch Hamsters); and producer Extrakd. It's an assemblage you might not expect to work, and their music is almost unclassifiable--except to say that it makes for a hell of an interesting listen. The album isn't a seamless mix of the quintet's talents, but it comes close: all five meet on a trippy, abstract plane and share the same twisted sense of humor. (If you recognize the two films they lift the phrase "klaatu barada nikto" from, this is the album for you.) Somehow, El Stew manage to fit funky dance tracks ("Reign of Terror"), bizarre dance tracks ("Surf Mission [Invasion of the Duck Punk]," with its chorus of quacks), and some very experimental, weird music side by side. That it never once feels out of place is an incredible accomplishment. --Randy Silver
