Music Review: A powerful statement

Ok so I have days where I get to thinking about what I'm doing with much of my time on this planet. I have a job where I do a lot of writing in a business context, most of it technical in nature. Sometimes I write reviews of music or other cultural artifacts which I enjoy or don't enjoy, and people read them. I have other hobbies too, which I tend to get pretty caught up in. What does any of it mean on a larger scale though? As many have before me, I ponder what if anything life is really all about.
As someone who has suffered some losses and experiences not unlike those which drove the creative engine behind this masterwork of an album, I realize that there are larger things at play than the experiences which tend to populate my everyday life. At times when something brings that realization thuddingly to my doorstep, I turn to this album and seek solace and understanding in its blunt portrayal of suffering and (ultimately) transcendence. This is brutal stuff if you really listen to it deeply, made all the more so for its refusal to compromise on the nature of the subject matter. Just look at the liner notes, full of gravestones and cartoons about funerals. The gallows humor can be a little much on the first half of the album, but it's the second half where E becomes the wise old guide who puts his arm around you and lets you know it's alright because it has to be (or your definition of what is "alright" has to change). It's this shift in perception when the listener reaches "Last Stop This Town" that shows E's true depth of understanding about how we move on from tragedy and rebuild our lives. In the end, the album is a celebration of life in all its brutal glory. It's unlike any other musical experience I have known.
So I come away from this every time feeling like I have a new appreciation for what's really Important, with the big "I." Time with loved ones. Lying in a field on a sunny afternoon. It may sound like a cliche, but I maintain that such things are only cliche for those who may not have had some of the experiences E relates here. For the rest of us, we have this album.

The sound of Eels' Electro-Shock Blues, the follow-up to the band's intriguing Beautiful Freak, reflects a year in which leader Mark "E" Everett suffered the loss of his sister to suicide as well as the illness of his mother and other tragedies.
